I've been meaning to get some studio time under my belt for a while now as I feel it's something that every aspiring car photographer should have experience in. When the PH session was first publicised I put my name down straight away however, I soon thought that maybe sharing the day with others wasn't what I was really after and I could probably learn a wee bit more with a one-to-one session of some type. So, to cut a long story short I paid a visit to the superb flowimages studio in Bristol. The remit for the day was really just to pick up the basics, follow their lead and maybe try out a few of my own things.

1. So to start things off we went for the classic front 3/4 shot. It took a little while to compose due to how big the bonnet is on the 6 series! I wanted a fairly aggressive, moody shot, not sure I've achieved it though? I can't take all the credit for this photo all, it was composed and the lighting was directed (I mean directed in the loosest possible terms, it was more "oooh I like that or oooh, not sure about that") by myself, but that really is all other than the processing which I'm not that keen on anymore.

2. This I can probably take a little more credit for, although again, I didn't touch the lighting, I merely told Ed and Johnny what I was after. This is exactly how I imagined it, and I'm super chuffed.

3. This last photo is a classic rear 3/4 shot. Again, I can't take all the credit, both Ed & Johnny lit the car with my oooh's and aaah's!

Here are some behind the scenes photos from the day, copyright flowimages.com:

(they do have a proper studio tripod, I was just using mine for a few quick detail photos)

There are more photos but I feel these are the better ones to start the thread off with.

It was an absolutely brilliant day, I learnt so, so much that there's no way I'll be able to remember all of it. If you want to get into car studio photography, or you need a refresher in a studio, or if you need to hire a studio I cannot recommend both Ed & Johnny flowimages.com enough, absolutely superb!

You'll be better opff e-mailing them for a price, I think they can tailor time vs cost to suit your needs. It's very good value though!

Nice.
No 2 was what I was hoping to achieve with my car but we ran out of time.Interestingly after all the comments from the PH day and the porsche is that you're first shot also has a matt finish to the paintwork. I guess using the lights to outline the car has this effect. I though it might have been caused by the dull reflection from the polyboards we were using to mask the lights from the paintwork.

Good inspiring shots.

I really like them! Especially number 2 as others have said; didn't BMW do a very similar shot a few years ago, I recognise that stance. Just shows, you obviously chose right!

Incidentally, Dean, I believe I'm your chauffeur on 14th August? smile

I think they may have done? I've certainly seen it used in an Ad campaign before somewhere.

And yes, I do believe you are smile We'll have to speak soon re: logistics etc.
