Hi all, I just received a lense I had 'won' off of ebay. A minolta 50mm F1.7.

Now I paid about the going rate on this lense give or take £10-20 and in general it is in great condition.

Came to try it this morning and the aperture blades don't spring closed as they should, so basically I am stuck on F1.7. Having had a look into the lense I can see dark, oily liquid all over the blades.

I've checked out: Clicky

But this all seems a little complicated and risky as I don't have the tools and have never done it before.

So, before I attempt to send it back, what are my other options? I considered going to Jessops but they want £25 to assess the lense and cannot give me an indication on what the final bill might be.

David.

I've had a lens with a sticking aperture - my guess is that somebody's tried to fix it with 3-in-1, which made it worse so they sold it.

The lens won't have a value that makes it worth repairing professionally, so I think you either have a go and be prepared to write it off if it goes wrong, or put it back on eBay.

Sometimes that happens to old lenses. The grease used for various bits inside the lens gets old, melts, and coats the aperture blades which stops them moving properly.

It won't be cheap to fix. Send it back to the seller and get your money back through paypal.

Exactly what happened on of my Takuma lenses for my Pentax, purchased new in 69. Not that I use it now but playing around with it the other day to show my son how 35 mm cameras used to be.

Send it back - grab the money back. It's as dead as a dead thing.
