So true.
I have just got to the 'found the old film camera' while still in the 'damn it I suck' valley.
To cap it all, I was explaining to a friend yesterday how I can't take a picture of a light foreground with a dark sky without a filter. He said 'put it on full auto' (D300s) which I did. 'oh how wrong he will be, I will just entertain his directions' I thought to myself, when the damn thing exposed it correctly.

That situation is pretty easy for the camera to meter. It's the other way round when you will blow out the sky or underexpose the subject if the camera is left to it's own devicesPints said:

haha, thats brilliant.
very true.
Truly brilliant. I'm squarely in the HDR hole right now.very true.

And I fear I may be stuck here for many more years.

Absolutely fine with taking the bracketed raw images, camera handles that nicely. The problem has been in following the on-line tutorials for GIMP to get it all put together. It just fails every darned time (GIMP, that is). I've also tried a few other separate apps that either claim to fake HDR (and generate a horrendous looking image), or automate the generation. And fail.
I could probably just do with spending a few hours in front of the laptop on an evening going through the tutorials. A few minutes here and there throughout the working day just isn't enough.
