Looking for some recommendations. Going to some friends Saturday night for some chilli, so looking for a casual red and white to take a long, but something a bit better than the supermarket specials!

looking for something around £10 bottle and not too heavy - what to you reckon?

New Zealand sauvignon blanc works well with chilli (I think) due to its 'capsicum' flavours. You shouldn't need to pay more than £7.99 for a reasonable one.

Add to that a Argentinian Malbec or Australian Shiraz - both go well with spicy foods.

I disagree. I'd not spend less than about £10 for a good Sav. Some passable ones for that price (Oyster Bay is ok)but you pays your money. At £10 I say try a Jackson (available in Waitrose). Personally though I think a new world Sav is a bit fruity for a chilli. I'd go for an Oaky Chardonnay for the white.

Red, a Rioja might work?
