My decking in nearly finished but as the row of gardens are on a slight incline I can see clearly into my neighbours garden which I don't like and I presume he won't be too fond off (but as he is looking uphill it will be harder for him to see).

So I'm looking for some screening provided by some potted plants that around 5/6/7ft high that are easy maintenance. Only I know the square root of nothing about gardening really.

Do such a thing exist?

Bamboo in a big pot will do the trick.

Pots mean extra maintenance. How about cutting neat round holes in the decking and plan through to the soil beneath?

My definition of maintenance is water a few times a month and trim twice a year.

Will potted plants demand more than this?

I'll look into the bamboo as I could mix and match a few.

Because the soil in the pot is not connected to the rest of the ground, it will need watering regularly in hot weather (and when you go on holiday), and because it is exposed on all sides, will freeze before the rest of the ground in winter. So yes, you have to be more watchful.

In high summer during dry weather your potted Bamboos will need watering every day. You could consider automatic drip irrigation such as that offered by Hozelock http://www.easywatering.co.uk/acatalog/Hozelock1.h...

A nice little Leyland Cypress. Give it a few years and your neighbour won't be seeing anything!

You'll need big pots or troughs for something upto 7ft high, but i'd go for either a Ceanothus or a Photinia Red Robin. Both will provide good screening when mature and can be clipped and shaped to suit your needs.

Set up some sort of trellis or wires for the plant to grow along and plant a Russian Vine. It should provide full cover with a bit of training by the end of summer.

You will also have no deck left as they grow out the way quite a bit as well .

Was a bit tongue in cheek. Leylandii keep us arborists in business!
