"payments could not be justified since they were being paid to the men for turning up to work and doing their jobs properly"

Its worse. Now £600M more for Birmingham taxpayers to pay council staff for turning up for work and doing their jobs.
Jesus. Who in their right mind would dispute the need to take a massive axe to public spending.

Not understanding it as it has no content int it...

Women not getting paid bonuse, that men got and mentioned something about Dustbin men on the same wage...

What a crap story and means nothing.

How come they didnt get the bonuses that they are suing for, was it they were not very good at their jobs, etc?

Erm, men get paid bonuses for working, women don't get paid bonuses for working. Practice found to be discriminatory, court instructs council to pay women on the same basis as men.

Don't see the problem myself.

Anybody care to guess what this will cost the nation when it is inevitably rolled out in every local authority?

Thats not the problem. Thats the tip of the iceberg.

£50k for refuse collection and geting paid bonuses for turning up for work IS THE PROBLEM.

Axe 50% of the staff and scrap all bonuses. Sack anyone not turning up for work without proper reason, etc, etc..

Anyway, Im sure thats what they will have to do, when whoever gets in starts turning off the drip thats already drained the provate sector corpse of free enterprise in the country.

Yes you did.

£12,000 per annum basic. £51K per annum including bonus. Not sure what you have to do to get the bonus apart from turn up and do your job........I shall be having words with my boss first thing in the morning....... the answer will probably end with the word .......off!!

They aren't bin men any more, they are recycling specialists, so easily worth £50k.

Green, innit. Stupendous.

If this goes countrywide we might be witnessing the end of this country as we know it. The public sector is going to bankrupt us, the abbreviation could eventually read "UPIGS". Any party that refuses to cut the unsustainable public sector needs to be locked up in an asylum.

One good thing that could come out of this is UPIGS could have a bloody good football team.

Would the bonus be included in pension calculations? Perhaps a way of reducing the pensionable basic wage to reduce long term liabilities while maintaining current pay?

One of my clients operates some of these services for councils. Apparently in around half the cases it costs the councils more to sub it out than it did to have it in-house.

I would think this is at the core of the problem. Basically the binmen were on a higher wage than others who were nominally at the same grade - their pay was made up of basic + bonus - nothing discriminatory against women, more that they were screwing the binmen out of pension contributions etc - except its now been turned against them.
