Is the Ultima an eligible car for UK still? Now that it as gone FIA rules it probably isn't allowed in.

We were informed yesterday by the organiser's of BGT that they have received and confirmed an entry for a Prosport LM3000 - which is essentially an Ultima with a Ford V6 in it - in the GT Cup Class, and inviting us to enter the two LM3000's we otherwise plan to run in Group C GTP... we might do!

Good grief - a Prosport would slaughter the Cup class! We used to do Snetterton in 68/9 seconds or so (with only 320bhp) when the drivers were trying, which is around 4 seconds quicker than the Tech 9 911s last year. It's not really a road car either, is it? Only one was road registered - and we ran it mainly as a racecar.

A Prosport would be just about okay for N-GT (20 were built), but Cup class? Surely not! I realise you'd have to bolt about 200kg to it for the power/weight ratio, but that would increase the weight by 25% - with the associated safety issues.

Oh and as I know I said recently a couple of times (please forgive my broken record...), Prosports and Ultimas aren't basically the same thing! Prosports have rocker suspension, for a start, and they don't have that peculiar engine cradle at the rear, either. Part of the cockpit is similar - as the centre section of the bodies is the same, thanks to Lee Noble - but behind the rear bulkhead they are entirely different. The Prosport was a pure racecar, the Ultima a road car.

This is setting a dangerous precedent. Cup should be for road cars only - 911s, VX220s etc, etc.

Edited to say that I'm not having a go - I'm just very surprised. Tim, which cars do you have - do you know their histories?

LOL... that's what I thought! I don't know the full details - I didn't take the call - but my business associate did, and we have definately been told told we can run them! I'm hoping to be in one of them so I'd be very pleased if a Prosport would slaughter the Cup Class!

I'm not that clued up on the mechanical differences between the Prosport and the Ultima, I only know that the Ultima was used as the basis for the Prosport's design. I was told recently that there were two road going Prosports built but I don't know whether it's true or not.

The cars don't belong to us, they belong to a business associate who has asked us to run them - I don't know the history of the cars but I'll try to find out. Both cars have been/are being rebuilt - photos on the Brookspeed site - www.brookspeed.com

I've been assured the cars are allowed in the Cup Class, and that being the case, there are three seats available @ £30K each for the season! Call me if you're interested! 07800 715450

is there any chance of the old brookspeed viper gts-r appearing in British GT this year?

I'm petty sure the brookspeed name folded either last season or the year before. An even greater shame for me than most others because I was hoping to do work experience with them as they are local to my "home". Car is probably in france now, most vipers seem to be at the mo.

There is a very, very slim chance of the GTO Viper originally built by Brookspeed, then owned by Hayles Racing (run by Parr and Chamberlain) and most recently owned by Peter Cook, being run by Brookspeed... But, and it's a big but, it will depend entirely on finding sufficiently funded driver's to make it viable. Peter offered me the car at the beginning of this week after another deal reported elsewhere on this site, fell through. But don't hold your breath, I can't see it happening!

Re Brookspeed folding: A Brookspeed company was liquidated last year, a delayed reaction to the effect caused by financial losses after the demise of the Interactive Sportscar Championship in 2001. In 2002 we managed to get to Daytona and run for the whole 24 hours and finish 5th in class. We returned to the UK to compete in a handful of BGT races before drivers, sponsors and cash finally dried up. The Viper is still owned by the private backer who funded it for us and the last I heard, it had been rebuilt and restored to it's original factory 'Playstation' colours - as raced by ORECA with Wendlinger/Beretta driving - and is in storage... it may have been sold, I don't know!

However! Companies fold, but the people behind them go on, the 'spirit' of Brookspeed lives on and the handful of people behind it remain determined to return... if the Prosports happen (very likely) or indeed the GTO Viper, the name 'Brookspeed' WILL be back! They didn't nickname me 'Arnie' for nothing! LOL... However, whether it will run out of Southampton or up here in Cheshire is not certain.

The Ultima should be allowed in, -I read somewhere that Ratel was happy for UK-only cars to be allowed into the championship (as this includes the TVR T400R remember), as long as all the cars comply with the technical rules for the classes...

The TVR T400R's are actually FIA homologated now though, aren't they? They have ACO homologation and I thought they had to pass the FIA safety test for that too. (Although not sure if that is part of the FIA homologation process).

So that would mean that the TVRs can enter any championship. The Ultima is a GT class car, it has always raced as such, under FIA regs, that we are running in the UK now, should it really be allowed in?

Well, the Scott/Brady Ultima last year was in the GTO (N-GT) category, as I believe it was built to the N-GT Technical Rules, but it doesn't pass the FIA homologation rules, (which amongst other things requires the car to be on sale on more than one continent) so couldn't race in the FIA series, but can here...... (a bit like the Gillet Vertigo over on the continent with reagrds to its home championship). Anyway, lets face it, there's more Ultimas on the road than there are T400R's(which is basically a race car too), (and, with respect to Colin Blowers GT-class machine, there's probably more Ultimas than there are Storms) so it'd be stupid to ban it, especially as it wasn't any quicker than the other machinery in its class. I say keep it in, and good luck to the boys running it for this season, I'd love to see them up at the head of the pack challenging for the (N-GT) win.

after being informed by telephone yesterday, we received written confirmation in the post this morning that the Prosport LM3000's and the Stealth are in!

as always, the goal posts in motor sport are always on the move so we shall see what happens when the rest of the cup class throw their toys out of the pram!

Well, I'm genuinely amazed. That really isn't right at all. I have no vested interest in the Cup class at all, but there is absolutely no way the Prosport should be allowed into that class.

Utterly incredible. Do the organisers have any idea what they've just allowed in, I wonder?

I'm more amazed still as I'm fairly certain they don't need the numbers boosted this season

I have a feeling that the organisers haven't got a clue what they've allowed in. A Prosport should be in N-GT or GT, if it would be allowed in at all. It's not really a GT car is it?

Well I didn't think it would take long! LOL! One of the cup class entrants has apparently spit his dummy out already! What a noble gesture! Never mind! If they ULTIMAtely (oh dear!) exclude the Prosports, at least we have something else up our sleeve!

Apparently, it was announced today that there will be no GT class! I heard this third hand so I don't know whether it's true or not. The series is going to be a waste of space, AGAIN!

I think I might do something else, a BGT class win won't be worth having on my CV.

Two weeks to the media/test day. That should shed much more light on what's really going on.
