Our insurance company (Privilege) require my wife's Golf GTi to have at least a Cat2 Thatcham approved alarm or immobilisor - which is fair enough.

Unfortunately, the car we've bought doesn't have any proof of fitting relating to the device fitted to the car. It appears to be a VW branded alarm/immob with full closure. Having just visited my local VW dealer, they claim that if the device is over 3 years old, and the device was fitted when the car was new (which I guess is the case - our car is an L reg), then the Thatcham approval is null and void!!!!

So it looks like I'm going to have to get another immobilisor fitted (about £160). Seems a bit silly as the one already fitted is working fine.

Anyone else experienced anything similar?

Well, I had the same from insurers with my V6 Cavalier, which was 4 years old when I got it.

I called Vauxhall Customer Services in Luton & they faxed a letter to the insurer, certifying the Thatcham compliance of the factory fitted immobiliser...

Perhaps a call to VAG UK is in order.. ?

You can find the full list of approved alarms and immobilisers on the Thatcham web site www.thatcham.org under security. This gives currently and previously approved devices including those fitted by the manufacturer.

I've sent a copy of the relevant page to my insurers before now and they've been happy.

Cheers,
JSG.
