Battery charging woes

I`ve finally discovered the fault on my S. Firstly after putting the front end back together the volts gauge showed 15+ volts with the engine running and the charging lamp not illuminated. The charging lamp would illuminate at low revs until the revs got above 1500 then it would go out indicating a charge to the battery. Turns out that the battery was shot and wouldn`t hold a charge. Scourced another battery and now only 11 volts on the volts gauge and no charging lamp at all at any revs The fault ---- broken brushes on the alternator, arse. Anyway got to get a new set of brushes then try again and try to find out why the brushes broke in the first place.

Steve I assume you know the little housing comes off the back with the brushes in it?
If its similar to the V8S alternator you buy the entire little mobule with the brushes in for now very much money, plenty on ebay for the V8 type but I guess any auto electrical place will have them.

Cheers Chris, yeah I replaced the whole lot last year. The brushes and regulator are one unit. I think the bit the brushes contact is heavily worn and grooved. I think it`s called the rotor or staor or something, so it looks like a recon or new alternator.
