Can anyone tell me what this is, do I need it, and what should I have in its place?

Clip on adapter for some sort of screen shade or other auxiliary device that fits over the standard screen?

I'ld take the eyecup off the one you have and put it on the camera. They come off upwards, easily, when walking round the pyramids. Go on ask my why I know.

The piece I have is fixed. The eye doesn't come off. TBH, I'm not sure the benefit to me and will try and get a std eye for glasses wearers like me.

i am currentley on my 5th eyecup, now i tie a piece of thread around the mount to tighten it up.
