The first Election debate is on the ITV tonight at 20.30

A poll on who you thought came across best or who won the debate?

This election is quite different from previous elections not only in that it is the first to have the debates which have been part of elections in the States and other places for years but more voters will be using the internet for discussion.

Five years ago there wasn't the numbers of people regulary using the likes of PH and all the other social networking sites and now ones opinions can be spread to a wider audience than before.

When the programme has finished cast your vote

I thought as this had been talked about for months and the last couple of days has been heavily plugged everybody would have thought what this was about!

ok I should have put the programme details up, I had not reckoned on the resident PH muppets trolling

Can someone make a poll for the 3rd debate too please. I think that's also happening in the future.

Lets also have an Exit poll now for May 6th.

Didn't the chancellor (and wannabe chancellors) have a debate last week, so tonight will be the 2nd one?

The TV listings say...................

The First Election Debate Thursday 15 April

8:30pm - 10:00pm
ITV1 London
As a piece of pure, live democracy, the opening debate between party leaders has to be worth watching. There's always the chance it might spark into life with some thrilling political fireworks (or indeed, this programme might be moved or cancelled, depending on events, dear boy).
Though on balance it's more likely to be a stalemate or a narrow points win, the kind of boxing match where nobody lands a clean blow. The participants would settle for that.
They'll be looking to keep it clean and statesmanlike, as their respective chancellors did a fortnight ago, fearing that Westminster-style knockabout politics looks shabby on TV and turns off voters.
So for them, calmness is all. But as a viewer, you can't help hoping for drama, for lost tempers, for someone to crystallise the fight with a savage one-liner or a historic clanger. Don't hold your breath.
The carefully negotiated format means no probing from presenter Alastair Stewart: he will merely field questions from the audience. If the personalities remain muted and the debate - on home affairs - remains measured, we'll just have to judge the leaders on, of all things, their policies.

Radio Times reviewer - David Butcher

You cannot really argue with that..............

what worries me is that the debate that could be the main one, the economy, is on the bbc, and we all know what they are like for sucking up to gordo.

I won't be watching it, I can't abide Question Time, let alone this.

And anyway, what is the point? There are many TV programmes and films that you simply do not need to have seen, to know exactly what they are like, and this is going to fit the bill more than anything.

Generic questions with generic answers, one and a half hours of meaningless soundbites.

I am very interested in politics, and in this election. But I would rather grate my penis, walk on hot coals and stick pins in my eyes simultaneously than watch this.

I'm not watching 'cos we'll have heard it all before.

Anyway, UKIP are not represented - and they have my vote already.

Would be funny if Cleggie comes out on top, if he does then I'll watch a re-run just to see Winky and CMD's faces.

I suspect Clegg could do best out of this to be honest, he hasn't had that much exposure before. He might be able to distinguish himself as not Dave, and not Gordon, rather than some other random bloke who looks like all the others.

This is history in the making, possibly for the one and only time depending on how it goes. I remember thinking the same way when men were walking on moon live on TV, but I was quite young then smile

Dimbleby was saying on the PM programme that he is looking forward to being the last one and I don't think he gives the gov/Brown an easy time from the comments he was making.

The thing is I already saw earlier what the format is, and that gave me little hope that this will be as good as it ought to be. Frankly, I care not what any of them say, I already have (in my head at least) no choice but to vote Tory to get rid of the lying scum.

I wonder how many times El Gordo will clench his fist and clunk it on to the lectern. In pique, anger, and frustration.....
