Would you be concerned if your steering rack started to show signs of wear before reaching 40k miles?

Its started to make a screeching noise which has been temporally resolved by grease but apparently this is only going to keep it at bay for awhile. frown

Its an early 111R and i've been told not a warranty issue but would be considered wear and tear!

What i need to know is it unreasonable to think that this shouldn't be wearing this quickly and the dealership should support me in changing this considering i purchased this car around 6 months ago?

Thanks for any advice

Is it really the rack and not the nylon bushes it mounts with? I think Hofmanns and Plans both replace these with brass. Apparently dealerships like to say "new rack" alot of the time when not necessary and this is all that needs doing. Mines going to be done at next service.

Mine was deemed to be worn and was exchanged for a refurbed one at about 56k miles, they said it was a relatively common occurance (this was an indy that I trust, not a main stealer)

I don't know exactly, but a lot less than a new rack smile

Thanks guys.

I can only now think I’ve got a bit of a lemon on my hands with the list of things done since I bought it going way past double figures (and not all minor stuff)

Going to go back with the issue and push or trading standards will have to step in.

Very annoyed by the whole experience and not something that I thought would happen when buying from a main dealer.

IIRC a replacement, re-conditioned rack costs c.GBP300 + fitting. A new one c.GBP500. I don't think it's unusual to encounter wear at 40k miles.

Yours will have a different rack to the earlier cars, and I don't know if they are rebuildable, but it's not unusual for an S1 or early S2 to need a rack rebuild every 30-35k miles. This isn't expensive to do, though, much less than the price of a new rack.

Bugger!

Right ok.. well that changes my choice of attack.

Still not happy that they do die after such a short period but must be one of those things.

So i suppose whats next..... clutch?
