Haven't done this yet, have been meaning to get round to it, so....
HERE IT IS!
My first car I picked up on 30th September, roughly 3 weeks before my 17th Birthday.
My parents bought me a brand spanking new Ka. I had the choice of 10 red Ka's, but i can't complain as my dad got the car for £5000 instead of the £7000 list!
I got LOADS of stick for having a Ka, but I had a brand new car that kept me out the rain
I genuinely loved this car. It was a fun first car, handled well, and actually surprised a few people on B roads. When grip did come to an end, the car would just slide very predictably with all four wheels.
After having it a year or so, I managed to add a deer to the mix, resulting in a nice dent in the bonnet. Luckily I managed to scrub most of my speed, otherwise I don't think that I would have been so lucky...
Obviously, I knew my bonnet was never going to be the same, so why not have some fun while I could? I then decided to do this....
When I was 19 I wanted something bigger. I was driving down to the Alps for a snowboarding trip, and we had 1 labrador puppy in the family with a second on the way.
The next car was simple, it had to be a Volvo!
A 1997 V70 Tdi manual (119k miles). This was a really cracking car with FVSH from the supplying garage and 1 owner. It also had every single receipt with it! Good V70 Tdis are few and far between, especially a car like this.
I loved the 'chuckiness', tank like qualities of the car and a 55mpg that was very easy on the motorway helped me love it!
I had planned of just running the Tdi into the ground but an inquisitive call to my insurance company resulted in me looking for one of these...
Why another Volvo?
Well...
The V70Rs are pretty reliable, quick enough, have the bragging rights of 250bhp/350nm and most importantly, are cheap on insurance. What other 250bhp car would a 19 year old be able insure for just less than £1000? Lets not forget the turbo whoooooooosh. It's also COMPLETELY different from anything else a 19/20 year old drives. Perfect then!
I am planning to make a few modifications which will make it handle nicely (for a Volvo!), and go a bit quicker. Stopping power is the main bugbare of owners of these. They brake, but just don't have the final bite you expect or want. Big brake kits are available, with 993 front calipers looking very nice under those 5 spoke wheels.
I don't think i'll sell this car, but I am aiming to have a E39 M5 next of an NSX. Lots of saving to be done then!

I echo Tom (above), obviously, once out of the car, I had no chance of working out who you were haha. Dad looked at one of these ex-demo in Red in 1999, even the reg ended in my name T*** TOM, but alas 'the dash is too high and it feels too hemmed in and oppressive', the fool! Bought an Audi A6 instead... Luckily, a friends Mum had an R-reg V70 SE-CD 2.5 with the obligatory spoiler, drove it like she stole it, looove the noise. I'm also one with a plan for a nice blown Volvo estate at some point, probably in another 2, maybe 3 years (University...). Saffron Orange or Laser Blue, clearly being the colour of choice.

I had a T5 when I was 19!
Bought it in 2004. Very high specification, previously owned by chairman of Everton. I had an engine failure on the Autobahn whilst doing a tour of Europe, so replaced it with a very low mileage S70R engine (stronger internals) and map, bringing it up to 240bhp.

Thanks very much for the kind comments. Its a 'quite' good condition example, but needs the wheels refurbed a dark anthracite 
and the rear end re-painted then it should be tops
The look on the average persons face as your floor it in 2nd and 3rd past them is
I'm not saying it's a 335d (mapped etc...) but it is a Volvo estate! Country road overtakes are dispatched with ease which is what impressed me the most. Torquesteer-not TOO bad, but it is a car design that I don't even want to count up in years...

I hope I'm back for this Sussex Run! Unfortunately Dad will not budge and I keep getting quotes for £3k, how are you managing it?! - Looks like I'll either keep the sMegane (and spend more money on it), or have to get an 03 Ibiza Sport 1.4, or an 03 Fiesta Zetec 1.4... Some nice, but pretty standard 19yr olds cars...

Phase1 (I think yours is a Ph1 being Saffron?) came in from '97 to '99 with a 250bhp/350nm 2.3T for the manual, and 240bhp/310nm for the Auto.
Phase2s were built for 6months in 1999 and are only available with the auto box and the 250bhp version of the 2.3T
Phase3 followed directly on for 6months after Ph2 cars and came with a new (to the R) 2.4T with 265bhp and 350nm, but only with an auto, Ph3s have twin pipes too, Ph1, and 2 have single exit pipes on the drivers side for RHD cars etc. Each Phase came with its own separate colour options, and Ph2 & Ph3 have a different coloured cover on the engine I think.

Wahay! My Volvo-nerdiness got it right! Mostly. That's what you get when your a car-mad 13/14/15+ year old studying Wikipedia, brochures and Volvo forums in your evenings!! I think I've still got a 1999 Volvo V70/V70XC/VR0R brochure somewhere in here... Yeah, we looked at a Venetian Red Pearl Ph2, gutted we didn't get it...
