I have a very rough slate floor composed of small and very irregular slabs - there is a difference of at least a half inch between the peaks and troughs across the floor. Is there any way of levelling this floor by grinding/sanding/cutting etc?

Thanks

I'm guessing the layers can be split in the same way that tiles are made. But don't know if/how this can be done on bedded-in slabs

slate is very soft...if you fancy diy and can put up with the dust then an angle grinder with a stone (green)grinding disk will do it...
just grind them till your satisfied...
every other option will be expensive
