How long does it take to import from finding the one you want to having it on your drive?

1.Find a car.
2. Needs to be at the docks 5 working days (a week) prior to the crossing for Customs clearance etc.
3. From the Eastern USA i.e. Baltimore the trip to say Southampton or Liverpool is usually 10 - 14 days.
4. If you do the paperwork before hand via an agent, you can collect the car the day after it arrives.
5. You then need to get the SVA work done which will take a few days and get the test done 1/2 day, but needs to be booked in advance.

Therefore it is possible to do it in 4 weeks, but I would say allow 8 weeks.

Regarding your other question. You will need a very large suitcase and an understanding excess baggage clerk to get it on to a plane! ......or a lot of money.

If you want to airfreight something big then call these guys
www.airfoyle.co.uk/services/empty-legs.asp

I went out to Kuwait with them once, carrying 20 tons of satellite earth station and ancilliary equipment. Flew in an old Belfast which is like a Hercules but bigger and slower ! That was 1992 and the bill was $385,000.

Stiej,

I agree with Vetteheadracer.

My experience was about 10-14 days in actual transit and it can take a few days waiting for the ship. I have shipped twice in both directions and costs are about £600 for East Coast USA and £1000 for West Coast. Add a couple of $100s for admin.

Plenty of specialists to do SVA mods but most are simple fixes which are dooable by a reasonable DIY'er. My Camaro came back in a container, door to door, and was was up and running in about a week.

This is all best case

I dropped one car off at the docks in Oakland 30th September '02, longshoremen promptly went on strike for 3 months, then had to ship perishables first when the docks reopened. Finally arrived in mid-February '03. Another 3 weeks to get the SVA appointment, nearly 6 months total wait

Your mileage will hopefully vary
