Going this year for the first time, after being an armchair viewer for the last couple of years.

What I want to know is how close to the track and the action will I be able to get. I'm more interested in the non grandstand areas. Am i going to be stood 200ft back behind a barrier/ fence/ marshall post/ trees/ camera crew etc etc or are there places where you can really get close?

IMHO Indianapolis and Arnage corners are some of the best for close viewing. Changes to the banking last year didn't help but you are still as close to the track (if not closer) than you are at Silverstone or the like. Can be very busy at times but because it's 24 hours there's always time to find yourself a space.

I've yet to find anywhere good to see the Porsche curves though. Any ideas?

For the Porsche Curves go to the Go Karting Track and stand on top of the pits building.

Standing on the bank on the inside of Tetre Rouge you can feel the ground shake
And even the start/finish straight is only about 10 feet from the fence
