The amount of commuters doubled or tripled today.... Easter gone and sun out - that makes for lots more interesting rides home

The amount of shiny bikes and hi-viz vests was highly apparent... all good but still funny to be flying past a squeaky heaving Apollo crapcycle with orange spoke reflectors and fluo'd rider even down to the velcro'd anklets

More the better I say... even if they do get in my way now and again.

While I probably fall quite close to this category if you happen to be a proper lycra-clad road warrior, I've noticed it too. I know a seasoned commuter shouldn't use cycle paths, but there's one stretch where they work out very handily for me and I was swooping downhill on just such a stretch this morning, when a young lady teetering in the opposite direction noticed me. Her eyes bulged out of their sockets for a second, she sort of wobbled around a bit and then finally made it onto her side of the path giving me a rather dissaproving look. Maybe it was the 30mph closing speed? Even more shockingly I actually overtook someone who was male and vaguely the same age as me. Up a hill. That makes a change from the usual OAPs and women with child seats on the back...

I fall right into this category at the moment

I haven't ridden for 8 years but have just moved to within commutable distance

Did Blackheath to Holborn in an hour today (appx 9 miles)

I got given my bike and helmet by a mate who has newer ones and off I went with another mate from work

I ache all over but have a nice sense of achievement

Yeah I noticed a lot of slow moving traffic this morning, but as the OP said, the more the better - we just need to get lorries banned in central London in the rush hour and we can all enjoy the road!!

Not really noticed any change but my commute is not far. Still overtaking everyone I see (little do they know I can keep at 25mph on the flat as I on;y work round the corner )

i noticed more this week too, its nice to see so many people out on bikes, especially commuting. Bristol was named the best cycling city in the UK recently (on what basis i dont know, certainly not road quality!) and the bike shops are doing a great trade...

Was bliss riding into the office on Good Friday - 36 mins for the 12 miles of so from Bromley > central london! - Absolutley loved it!!!!

I go from Sidcup to City (last year was to Regents St.)

Route Sidcup-Eltham-Blackheath-Greenwich-Rotherhithe-Towerbridge

just over 19km and that's about 46-47 minutes coming in and 53-55 coming back (gotta love Greenwich park hill!)

Cheers, its a bit of a circuitous route my mate took me on but avoids a lot of roads

Met him at the Cutty Sark, went through the Tunnel, then along Thames for a bit, Limehouse Link, through some big tunnel, Embankment and then up Fleet Street

Not sure if there is a better route

Yeah give us a wave, I am on a bright yellow old Scott bike, I'll be red in the face and breathing hard

I am not looking forward to cycling up the hill in Greenwich Park tonight

I'd go Blackheath common, down Greenwich park hill, round one way system then follow the Evelyn st/lower road through past Rotherhithe tunnel entrance and up to Tooley Street.

Most of that is on a busy road but has a fair sized bus lane plus traffic is generally slow enough to make progress relatively safe.

From Tooley st I'd be inclined to nip down Southwark street and across Blackfriars bridge

Cable Street munches up most of the miles. I only do that route, as opposed to the Jamaica Rd/Tooley St one, as it 90% avoids lorries, white-van-man and taxi's hellbent on mowing you down.

Any idea how much of the Thames Path you can ride down south of the river? I was under the impression that it's pretty patchy since the glut of recent new developments.

Dubbs - interesing - you're local to me then.. - I'm actually in Chislehurst (but most people know where bromley is.. - or have at least heard of it!)
My ride sounds almost as interesting as yours - Mottingham > Lewisham > New Cross, and then onto Old Kent Road, and into town via waterloo bridge.. - Not exactly exciting, but it keeps me fit....apparently!

I tend to do the Greenwich route purely because the main drag down to Rotherhithe is a wide road and a lot has bus lanes... the bits that don't tend to have stationary traffic so it's not too bad. Old Kent Road is a b1tch :-) Would rather avoid and go any other route, especially that whole Lewisham/New Cross bit :shudder:

Greenwich hill is a lovely treat as a halfway point on the way home
