Quick help with console setup- xbox 360

I'm sure I'm being dim, but bought it to my parents for a week whilst staying with them.
I have the HDTV lead set to tv and the relevant plugs in the back of the telly - red, yellow, white

the sodding display is in black and white- what am I doing wrong???

Any help greatly apprecited??

Have you plugged the yellow plug into one of the component video plugs by mistake (these tend to be clour coded red, blue and green)

HDTV or not, if you are using red, yellow and white (composite and the lowest of qualities) the quality will be quite bad.
Use the Red, green and blue (component) connectors for video and you will get HD quality. Then just plug in the red and white (linked to the yellow) for audio

Thanks all.
It would appear on the tv I am using that there are 4 video channels, operated by red, yellow and green telextext buttons.

All I did was press the relevant one, on it came in black and white, pressed it again, and there it was in colour.

Not too embarrassing!!
