Hello All

I decided a while ago the while I was getting my noisy gearbox out, that I may as well get the engine out and smarten things up a bit, and also have a quick look to make sure all is well in the engine.

You know how these things go though and one thing kind of leads to another.

I have the engine and box out, and the box is away for recon and should be back soon, so it is a busy time trying to get the engine sorted. So far I have:-

1)Removed both cylinder heads from the engine.

2)Refurbed one head and refitted it. To my surprise it was all pretty clean inside, with no ridging of the cylinder bores at all.

3)Other head has all the valves now ground in (some were quite pitted)

4)Timing cover and sump are off...timing cover and water pump cleaned and painted again. Had 2 broken water pump studs which was a faff to drill out and re tap.

5)Inlet manifold cleaned up (boy, does it collect the dirt in there) and high temp painted.

6) block fully cleaned up, degreased and painted with enamel (took 4 coats to cover it well)

7) Fuel rail and accessories cleaned and polished...having injectors cleaned and new seals etc to be fitted on rebuild.

8)Removed main bearing caps and all looks good..no scuffing, only slight polishing in some areas...still toying with chaniging them anyway.

9)Alternator stripped down for refurb...and you guessed it...clean and paint..did toy with having the case chromed...will just paint and fit new brushes and regulator

10) exhaust manifolds away for high temp coating

11) decide whether to have rocker covers re chromed 9about £80-100 each!!) or cleaned and powder coated (about £20 each)

Still to do is:- Refit RH cylinder head...waiting for new bolts from Ford...the pattern ones I got did not inspire confidence when torquing down.
Replace big ends and mains when heads refitted.
Replace oil pump
Replace crank spigot
Time up the distributor and refit timing cover and sump.
Clean up engine bay chassis, powder coat all engine mounts etc (now done)
Might do a body lift to look at outriggers as fronts look a little rusty.

Put it all back together again.

Anyway, some pics for inspiration...

Cheers

Ant

I like the red block, very smart!

Ant did you clean all the coke off the valves, its a right bugger to do but I tried them in my blast cabinet and after about a minute they look like new, you should have brought them over!

Thanks for sorting the photos Norman...not sure what I did wrong...

Yes Chris, the valves were a bit of pain to clean, but I put them in the drill with the stems protected with tape, and cleaned them up with fine emery cloth...the exhausts were hard going but the inlets only about 5 minutes each.

The blast cabinet sounds like a great idea...I'm getting through wire brushes and sanding bits for the Dremel like nobody's business.

I'm still a little unsure about swapping the bearings but will probably go for it anyway as they are so cheap. I wasn't sure about painting the block, and was less sure about red, but it's growing on me now, and looks good with all the silver parts, and the powder coated engine mounts and various pipes.

I just need to smarten up the major hoses as well now...they all look sound but want to wrap them in samco tape, but not sure how this will look.

How are you getting on with your engine Chris?

Cheers

I have had the bottom end of the engine professionally rebuilt by Rob Robertson V8 Racing , it had a wear groove on one cylinder which was a bit odd, but its had a 20 thou rebore and new pistons now, and the crank polished with all new bearings.

I'm just mucking about with odd jobs before the engine goes back in, painting the sump etc (outside only). Its in primer at the moment with some paint to be applied tomorrow.

I am going to fit the engine without heads then finish the engine build with it in the car, the engine is very tight to get in and out of the engine bay fully assembled and I don't want to bash up all the new bling!

I've bolted a sheet of cardboard over the bores and valley to stop any rubbish getting into the engine.

I'm hoping to get the engine in this week then earsdriving

These things have a habit of taking longer than you thought!

Good stuff Chris

Give me a shout if you need a hand to get things back in, especially if you are putting the engine and box back in together.

Cheers
