Hi Guys,

I've just had one of my photos featured on Flickr Explore, is that good? I've never had so many views! I only knew it was on there because someone congratulated me on it.

Is it a big deal? I do feel slightly excited. bounce

My flickr is http://www.flickr.com/photos/tlynchie/

Here's the pic:

Explore / About Interestingness

Interestingness!

Besides being a five syllable word suitable for tongue twisters, it is also an amazing new Flickr Feature.

There are lots of elements that make something 'interesting' (or not) on Flickr. Where the clickthroughs are coming from; who comments on it and when; who marks it as a favorite; its tags and many more things which are constantly changing. Interestingness changes over time, as more and more fantastic content and stories are added to Flickr.

We've added some pages (and changed some existing ones) to help you explore Flickr's most interesting content. Before you start though, you might want to take your phone off the hook, send your boss to an executive training session and block off some time on your schedule, because we don't think you're going to be walking away from your screen any time soon. Beautiful, amazing, moving, striking - explore and discover some of Flickr's Finest.

I'm sure I've seen that or a picture very like it on an Android phone application called Background. It takes pictures from from the web (possibly Flickr Explore judging by this thread) and offers them as phone backgrounds. Applications like this might help to explain the views.

its a crock of ste is what it is! Some great images get in some ste, I've had some of my piss poorest appear simply due to all the tags, views and info associated with it. There are some truely great pictures that make it and some that are shocking so its inconsistent

I said explore is ste wink A lot of the technique is to get into certain groups we your images out and you are moer guaranteed an explore. Some groups lower your chances, sometimes great images just deserve to make it and make it in.

I have had a few of my photos on 'explore' too, and none of them are what i call 'my greatest photos' or my best work from my collection.. explore works on a simple method . The amount of views and comments made on the photo you get per day and how many tags and groups the photo is placed.. So a photo gaining around 20 to 100 plus views ,around 4 plus comments per day and gets marked as a favorite more than once a day ,But is only placed in 'around but no more than' 10 groups, plus has around 10 tags added to the photo will make it in..its really just a auto system with a 'fair' balance of the above numbers!. it does make for some Excellent work being on explore. BUT also like for me...

So like this pic from my photostream makes Explore rolleyes

But this pic does not

Are you sure you've got those photos the right way round?

On the one hand, you've got a good candid shot of a household name star indulging his passion for one of the greatest cars of all time, presumably about to run it out at Goodwood, and you're surprised it made it in.

On the other hand, you've got a completely uninspiring snapshot of a Ferrari with a dull background which anyone could've taken, and you're not sure why that wasn't excluded?

Technical perfection of a mundane subject is still going to be a mundane shot. Catching a moment which tells a story will always be more interesting, even if it's not 100% technically brilliant.

If Explore put Rowan in but not the Ferrari, then I reckon it's working pretty well. If, however, you got the photos the wrong way round, then it's crap! hehe

To be fair my 'mundane' shot of a ferrari was not really the best example of a shot that should make explore (i well know, its not 'technical perfection' and fully understand why its not on explore !)..I did wonder if it would draw comments from the photo smart arse 'pros' like yourself) nerd so how about these 'mundane shots' that DID make 'explore'

Or how about this

Whats so good about them!?...At the end of the day i was just posting on the forum to say about how explore works...(or not as the case maybe!)i am Not trying to make out any of my photos are any kind of photo prefection! So really, why did you have to make such comments !? rolleyes

I see you've glossed over that Kermit thought the Rowan Atkinson picture was a good example of candid photography. Why would you post pictures on a forum if you're so delicate as to be offended by some constructive and honest feedback? In my opinion he's spot on by the way.

Constructive criticism helps us all learn so it should be encouraged shouldn't it?

Err think your both missing my point, Guess i went about my point the wrong way with the wrong pictures !! paperbag
Yes Constructive criticism is all the better and to be fair kermit is correct on his feedback..But that was not what i was after !! rolleyes. The point i was trying to make is, should such pictures like the rowan pic or even my other car pics that have made it on to explore (which i do not think are great) be there over such Great work by petrolveins or 01101001. Their work would appeal to many many people.. But a car pic , now thats not 'interesting' to many.. is it?

Ok, I see what you're saying. As has been said on this thread already, it's just down to whatever algorithms the site uses. I can see why the Atkinson picture made it though as it is an interesting insight into someone's passion.

Ah, but now you're moving the goalposts.

I wasn't taking the piss in asking if you'd got the shots the wrong way round. I honestly couldn't see the point you were trying to make.

If the person in the first shot had been a complete unknown rather than Rowan Atkinson, then it would've been a completely meaningless snap to all but the person in it, and quite rightly shouldn't be making any sort of list of decent shots.

So now you've moved on to posting other photos which have made it and you don't understand why. On those, I would agree with you. OK, that Fezza is a bit more of a classic than the first, and it does have the background blurred out to a degree and all that sort of guff, but at the end of the day, it's a relatively uninspiring shot, just like the first one was, and I would then agree with you that neither should've been picked.

I think the mistake you made in the first one was that you posted one pretty good reportage style celebrity shot and one pretty dull car shot, but in your own mind, you were comparing both as pretty dull car shots?

Let me know if it would be any easier for you to understand if I were to insert some rolling eyes smileys.

Thread Revival ...

With regards to Flickr Explore if you upload a photo on a saturday. Will it be published in the next days explore only?

So you couldn't upload a photo on a monday and get it explored on the Thursday? We should nominate a photo, everyone favourite it and see if it makes explore as a test to see how it works?

Doesn't work with how many favourites or views. I've had a couple of shots in there with a handful of views, and no favourites. There's no pattern to explore.
