Been thinking about getting into photography now for a while.

Mainly for pictures of scenery and cars.

Where should I start / What should I buy etc. etc. ?

1) How much do you want to spend?
2) Do you think you might grow into the hobby and want to do more one day?

If so I can recommend the EOS300. I bought one 2-3 years ago and have taken well over 5000 pics with it now, including a few months worth of off road expeditions across the Australian outback and world wide travel.
The standard lense let me down at the end of a years worth of abuse (and over 4000 shots) but i couldnt complain, it even looked knackered!

Its my first SLR and has me hooked. Looking at purchasing new lenses within the next month and hopefully a digital SLR within the next 1-2 years.

The EOS300 was an excellent starting place. I paid* £300 for body and lense but I think you can get it a lot cheaper than that now.

*insurance claim for stolen compact camera. Had it replaced with the SLR by offering a bit of extra cash. I think total value was £300

Yup - an SLR is probably the best way to learn photography, and needn't cost a fortune. Warehouse Express are currently advertising the Canon EOS300 for £99, or £199 with Sigma 28-80mm & 100-300mm lenses.

The added advantage of going for something like the Canon EOS300 is that if you get into photography more, you can upgrade the body to a top of the range £5.5k DSLR (1Ds) and still use the same lenses that you bought for the 300.

Mine came with a Canon 28-90 lens.

The deal that Ed suggests sounds like a bargin.

I have seen loads of packages for the Eos 300D, some with the special Canon lense for between £800-£900 and some with a larger or even 2 Sigma lenses for around the same price.
What are the main differences between the Sigma and canon lenses then?. Im guessing quality?

I started putting more thought into my images after I joined a photographic club. It's really good to see lots of other peoples work and to find the strengths and weakness of my own.

Not all clubs are the same and I suspect our club is not typical. In our club the emphasis is on the result, not techie stuff. We've got nearly 50% women membership! The club membership is growing significantly at the moment!

Agreed that teccie stuff alone is not much use, but I like to know what's going on in the little box.

There's a women-only camera group round here - raving lefties of course - I wonder if I should try to join and then get compensation from the sex commission equality tribunal thingy when they refuse my application...?
