where can i buy firebricks for my open fire?

in my old open fire their are 2 bricks either side which i believe protect the fireplace and also retain heat. anyhow these are very old and literally crumbling away, can anyone point me in the right direction on where to buy these, and one thats local to birmingham would be even better!! thankyou for any help in advance.

A proper good old fashioned family hardware / diy type shop. There are still some out there if we all remember to drive past those diy 'superstores' that sell only what they thing we need.
I can think of several places in Scarborough and neighbouring towns I could walk into and pick them up from the shelves - doesn't help you though.

I've got bloody loads of fire bricks!

When we re-built the house, my builder simply over ordered by a factor of two and then fked off and left me with the bill (and several other problems). I'm in West Sussex but you're welcome to have as many as you like

Contact your local Solid Fuel Advisory Centre. They should have a list of Merchants that stock replacement parts for fireplaces. If it's a shaped brick, getting hold of the name/design of fireplace will help, if it's too old, if you can get the originals out in one piece, take them to your local Merchant with a brick cutting facility and see if they can cut standards to fit.

Lucky. Usually they over order, and offer to take the extra off your hands so they don't clutter up the place. These then sit in the yard until they find another job to use them on, charging the new customer for the bricks you've already bought.

I did find them taking varies other bits and when I challenged them, the 'boss' got quite stroppy and threw it out of their van suggesting it was 'overs' and why should I want it?
