If you dont mind travelling a bit why not look at some of the big town 30 or so minutes travel away from me mans. Last year and the year before we stayed at a formula 1 / Ibis in Angers (less than 45 minutes drive)

If you want to camp, there are some municipal sites in between that are usually free / a few euro's at the most.

blimey that seems cheap considering the stupid prices of ferries alone this year. That seems an utter bargain but I have to say the camping part is half of the le mans experience IMO.

Stayed here a few years on the trot in the nineties.

Hotel de la Sarthe in Chateauneuf-sur-sarthe is great in a wonderfull quiet village location on the river. About 30-40 minutes drive from circuit.
Lovely resturant on deck over river.
Good value too.

I managed to get us booked in using the following. Your French needs to be fairly good (mine's not and I struggled) if you're telephoning but they were really helpful.

We are staying at a farm about 15km outside Le Mans that did have spare rooms but not 4. If you need any help, mail me.

The Le Mans tourist board is good as well. Can`t remember the contact details but they spoke English and normally have rooms right up to the last minute.
