I always take as much kit as I can into the cabin with me - no way I'd trusting the folks in baggage to not lose/not break anything..... Never a problem so far.

Spot on, on vacation I normally have my backpack filled with my and Mrs CVP's camera gear. It has never been a problem so far. I just hope they never weigh hand luggage or I'm in deep deep water !

Funny you should say that. I travel on flights a reasonable amount, something like 30 or so per year (which is about 28 more than I'd like!). I had my hand baggage weighed in 1999, and never again since. Until December last year that is, when Emirates of all people started enforcing the 7KG limit.

My bag was, of course way over, it always is, but I simply took my laptop out before they weighed it. It came in at bang on 7kg, so I took it off them, popped my lappy back in, and wandered away to the departure lounge. They never said a word.

If you can sling a camera around your neck while checking your bags in, it'll be a useful bit of weight out of your cabin luggage if it ever gets weighed (and you can put it back inside as soon as you walk away). Just watch whether or not the people in front of you are being made to weigh their bags.

7kg is not going to cut it at all, ours is always way over that. Going on one sailing holiday the camera gear weighed more than my checked luggage smile

I simply pretend that the rucksack on my back is light as a feather, check-in on line and if necessary let Mrs CVP present travel docs for boarding passes and squirrel the bag away in front of a bag chek desk so the clerk does not see it. So far I have got away with this approach.

On the other hand I always get pulled over once the bag goes into the X-ray machine but the guys there are quite relaxed when you open it and show them the kit. I've had a good couple of conversations with keen photographers who just also are baggage x-ray folks.

Ha ha. Mine's not quite that heavy, more like a mere 10 kgs! I'm a biggish chap, so can disguise that weight quite easily.

I've only been stopped once recently (well, over a year ago) going through X-Ray, and had everything (and there's a lot) stripped out of my rucksack. Makes me wonder why I carry so much junk around to be honest. Cables, more cables, binoculars, laptop, several portable hard drives, ipod, several different earphones, then there's the work stuff, fibre cleaning tools, test pattern generator, mains to Schuco/edison (etc) adaptors, the list goes on. It took them ages to go through it all. Didn't bother me in the slightest, everything is 'flight safe', so to speak, and it saved me wandering around the airport bored while I waited!
