I am after a bit of advice from the PH photographers, I have just knocked my D70 off my desk, first I thought the lens (18-55) had shattered inside but luckily (possibly) it was only the Hoya UV filter that is broken

I have now got the filter off and put the lens/body back together but the lens now clunks when twisting through the mid zoom (sorry for the none technical description - I know nothing about cameras). The camera will take pictures but every now and again, you can hear noises inside the body when it is trying to focus and won’t take a shot, but if I manually move the lens, it will focus and take a shot

So to the question - can the lenses be repaired / serviced or should I just bite the bullet and order a new lens

You can get the lens repaired, you can either send it to Nikon or find a place local to you that does repairs smile It might be pretty pricey though by the sounds of it!

the same exact thing happened to my 18-55 , but I didnt search for a guy to repair it. I opened it instead. the plastic thing which moves the glass was broken and to replace it I think would cost more than the lens. but good luck and report when you have news smile

I have a feeling it may be cheaper to buy a new lens....

You could send it to somewhere like Fixation but the bill is likely to be as much as a new lens - frankly this could be the time to buy new and/or upgrade.

I would avoid using AF as it sounds like you might be straining the D70's body motor and you don't want to break that as well...

Thanks for all the advice, first thing I will do is stop using it!

After a quick look on the bay of E, I have found new / 2nd hand ones for circa. £70/£90 and I can imagine by the time I have sent it off somewhere the cost will be around that

I'm just glad it didn't have my father-in-laws 70-300 lens on, as I only took that off a couple of days ago

Park Cameras seem to be doing it for £90 new:

Or consider the very good 18-70mm on which the Young Simpo cut his digital teeth:

(not VR but faster at the long end)

A good find, thank you - I like the idea of the 18-70 but will probably stick with the 18-55

Not sure what you mean, as per my post above, I don't really know anything about cameras the D70 was a present a good few years ago so don’t know much about lenses etc

I am the sort of person who leaves it on Auto and just takes photos

18-55mm is a verry good lens especially for this price.
