Looking at buying a new camera and Jessops told me that I need a memory card as no new cameras come with memory cards. Is that right? Seems a little odd that you can buy a camera and not be able to use it.

Is this a hang over from when you had to purchase film seperatly?

TBH those that ever did come with them were pathetically small and only of use as a last resort - you ended up buying a bigger/faster one anyway.

Its just a way to make the camera seem cheap - but you end up paying a lot more!

Great Camera for £99, you want a memory card sir?, a case sir?, that £99 camera costs you £140!!

I picked up a Canon EOS100D package from Jessops at the weekend:

Canon EOS 1000D
Canon 18-55mm lense
Tampron 75-300mm lense
Case
Sandisk 4GB Memory Card

£499.00

So the answer is that you will need to buy a card (cheaper places online than in Jessops) unless you buy one of their packages like I did.

Most new cameras don't have them, it seems.

I bought a 1000d from John Lewis recently and it did not have a memory card.

Both Play.com and 7dayshop are great for Sandisk memory, much cheapness.

If you don't get a Suitable card thrown in woth the camera - take your business elsewhere.
Everytime I've bought a digicam I got a card with it eg:
Canon 400d came with 4gb Sandisk
Canon 40D came with 4gb extremeII sandisk
Canon 50D came with 8gb Sandisk Extreme III
Canon G7 came with 1gb sandisk
Canon G9 came with 2GB extreme II sandisk
My next cam will either be a 7D or 5d Mk2 with either of these I'd expect a card capable of using their full HD video capabilty ie a Sandisk extreme IV or the new 60mb/s Extreme. in at least 8GB size.
You have to haggle maybe to get the card - but the card costs the dealer pennies in comparison to the camera sale price, so make sure you get one to close the purchase - otherwise go elsewhere, there's plenty of sellers - not so many buyers
Good Luck

Agree with the above. Not standard, but if a shop wants to do business, will they lose it over a £10 card?

Well, the cheaper you want it, the more bits they take off to try to retain margin.

A camera will only come with a card if the manufactuer puts one in, or the store makes a package.
I get asked this alot, but its a completely differnt product.
Would you complain if you bought a house with out any furniture or a car dvd player with no dvds.

Most camera will have a small internal memory, roughly 12 shots. You dont have to buy one you tight bd. biggrin
