Labour's legacy. Power to the unions (they are funded by them afterall).

Times like these make you wish we had a PM with 'balls' to run the country, take command, and make the hard decisions.

Last time we had PM with balls.......they actually didn't wink

"British Gas has been fighting to make the engineers work longer hours. Privately executives, including the managing director Phil Bentley, are exasperated that many of the engineers get away with working a four-day week, even though they are paid for a full week's work."

Presumably these are the 'gas engineers' who don't have the wherewithal to run their own businesses, should be pretty easy to outsource their jobs I would have thought.

Whilst not exactly the winter of discontent, there does appear to be a large number of workers whom one would think might favour a labour administration, doing their damnedest to ensure that there isn't. And even if there isn't a political angle, there are a lot happy to cut off their nose to spite their face at the moment. We are all hurting, but clearly many are not deep thinkers.

wrong.... It's power to the people, if the majority of the union people didn't want to strike, they wouldn't be an official strike

do you think people shouldn't have any rights at work?
61% turn out 82% vote for strike..just about 50% of the membership vote for a strike? Hardly overwhelming is it?

we brought down a government before, we could have done it again easily...
Well that sounds like a good democratic way to run a country - allow a government to be ousted by a handful of the population, very commendable

You are living in La La land. There was no way the miners could have done that.

Typical of the narrow minded selfish thinking prevelant amongst 70's and early 80's union scum, absolutley no respect for democracy, the welfare of anybody else or the overall health of this country.

On the PH Manifesto thread this is how I would deal with the Unions.

Making all public services such as Ambulance, Hospital, Fire, Police, Transportation and Utility services essential emergency services and illegal for them to strike. That will remove the need of Union meddling and threatening strike action.

The unions are so militant now before the squeeze on living standards has really begun.

We face at least five years of stagnant wages and higher taxes and energy bills.

are you too young to remember the miners doing that actual thing?
They brought down a government lead by that useless tt Heath, who hadnt planned for anything like it.
Thatcher, on the other hand, had planned for it and stockpiled huge amounts of coal amongst other things. Not only that but the miners had Scargill leading them. A even more useless tt than Heath.

So not a chance in hell.

It's utterly bizarre that you've joined a motoring forum simply to debate in Politics, how much are you paid for this garbage?

Its perfectly obvious to me that the timing of this strike is designed to get as much leverage on the government as is possible.

I wouldn't mind betting this strike is more about the power of a union to influence a political party for its own ends, rather than the benefit of the union's members.

To be fair that is a load of carp and seems to have been made up by the reporter, BG workers do more hours in the winter when there is obviously more demand which is averaged out by a four day week in the summer when demand is zilch.............. the average working week over the year is 37 hours.

Cut the st. These lazy fkers have got to either put up and shut up or actually get off their own arses and make their own employment. If you don't like it, fk off. It's not like the mill owner owns you. It's not like there aren't a fkload of people who WOULD DO THE WORK. I hear time and again of these roused rabbles who have it pretty good really, air staff, postal workers, etc. They have it pretty good, they have jobs.

I get angry with this bent-over-backwards wetness that pervades our "victim" society and it's rulers. It is ridiculous.

If you don't like the terms of your work, as outlined in the contract, fk off. If we want to change the contract, we will give you a certain period of notice and if you don't like it, leave.

I have done all sorts of work and my last stint as a teacher made me particularly angry when I was reading the "Strike for Pay" posters from the NUT. These champagne communists rousing laziness in the prone-to-laziness.

If I was the chief, I would say "Don't like it? You are free to leave" The unions are merely parasites upon lazy good for nothing carcasses.

Ship in the poles and turf those fkers out on their arses.

People need to get a grip and stop being so romantic about life. It is hard work and you actually have to do some work at some point, unless you are the fking chief. If you aren't the chief, you are also free to set up your own operation with your own effort and then enjoy the fricking things the chief (and the union s) enjoy.

Whingy whingy whinge. GET BACK TO WORK, OTHERWISE YOU WILL BE REPLACED. rage

fking communists. curse

I have just got off the blower to a mate who is struggling with his business as there is no bloody work and these lazy, good for nothing wasters are talking about striking. The s rolleyes

Total fking wasters encouraged by feathered nested s and facilitated by a fricking restricting, communist employment law.

You want to be a lazy and not work, GO TO BLOODY SPAIN!!!!!
