3 red lights on xbox 360, has it happened more than once?

Sorry if this has been discussed before but i couldn't find anything in search? I just wondered has this happened to anyone more than once? Mine has just started flashing for the 2nd time and is now out of warranty! Anyone know how much it will cost to get fixed? Thanks, Rock.

Yes it has happened to a few people more than once.

I think that MS charge £95 to repair the machine. So IMO it is worth trying the X-Clamp replacement kit that on ebay for no much. And then when that fails buy a new arcade which are around £100 now.

Hmm, Does the Microsoft website definitely say it's out of warranty? or are you assuming because it's over a year old? I thought my warranty was way past it but Microsoft still repaired (read 'sent me a brand new one') well after my end of what I thought my warranty date was.

put the serial number into the MS support part of Xbox.com
and check weather it is still covered for 3 red lights...they extended the cover for THAT specific fault

3 Red lights means one of your cables at the back isnt situated right, 4 red rings then start panicking !!

Check that it actually is out of warranty on the website first, as MS offer a 3 year warranty for the RROD, and I think it's something like a year from your last repair.

If it is, I think it's about £80 to repair.

I've found MS customer support useless, moreso with the Engrish speaking call centres!

The X-Clamp repair is pretty simple, it's more a case of whipping the front plate off and the rest of the case seems to be pretty much made with quick release clips. Both the X-Box's I've fixed so far were out of warranty, as it is a free repair if under 3 years.

A kit like this should do, but try and go for the ones with a reasonable thermal paste and nylon washers:

Basically the repair takes the give out of the board from the X-Clamp and makes the board less likely to flex under heat. Easier to do than it sounds, I used a small and narrow flat headed screwdriver and a couple of torx bits (8 and 10.)

Once you've taken it to bits it's just a case of cleaning the old thermal paste off the processors, something like acetone on one of the cotton ears buds did the trick for me. And then screwing it all back together. It sounds more technical than it is and just don't overtighten the screws due to it being plastic/aluminium!

if you not cormfortable doing it then normally there are guys in local paper or ebay that will do it for around £30.
