CO2? Powder? What's a sensible size to go for?

Hi there

I take it your taking about a single garage, with a car, bench and a few pots of pain, thinners white spirit etc around?

Using no expert advice, I would say powder, given their versility and cheapness. I've got an £8 jobbie which is about the size of a 1.5 litre bottle.

Water is no good for flammable liquds or electrics which rules it out.

If your garage is larger, with a couple of cars, say welding gear or more machinery, then I'd look into something more expensive, perhaps Co2 or foam (it should be easy to search what each extinguisher copes with best)

If you work for Shell or BP, then I'd give your boss a call.

Thanks Ian,

Yes, just a normal domestic single garage. I saw that Machine Mart have 2kg powder extinguishers for 25 quid or something so will probably go with that....

I'd have said powder as well. Do check the use by date regularly though, and give it a good shake every few weeks. Apparently overtime the powder can "clump" and make the thing more of a paperweight than an extinguisher.

I'd go for foam personnally. Powder ones are horrible if you set them off indoors.
