My grandfather recently passed away and whilst hearing all the stories of his life I heard that he had been on a cruise on the RMS Mauretania shortly before WWII. I knew the name of the ship rang a bell, and was able to recall that it was the sister ship of the RMS Lusitania and that its sinking had been instrumental in the Americans joining the war.

Anyway, the upshot of this is that in going through his possessions my step-grandmother (is that even a proper term? i digress) found this penknife from his cruise aboard and wanted it to go to someone who knew what it meant, and remembering what I was able to say about the ship, gave it to me.

A lovely little thing, like most of my grandfathers possessions has seem some good use. Anyway, just wanted to share this little find.

That's the 2nd Mauretania, the first Mauretania (sister ship of the Lusitania sank during WWI) was scrapped in 1936.
