PlayTV for PS3 - £30 at Sainsburys

I picked up one of these on the weekend, and I think it is nifty!

Well for £30 (usually £60-70), a bargin, that turns a PS3 into a PVR, that I can export a recording off the PS3 as a MPEG and edit on a PC or whatever. I have tried recording things while playing online games, and it doesn't affect it, and the quality looks good.
Although I already have a DVD/PVR recorder, which I have to burn a DVD if I want to keep something, having a 2nd recording device is useful if 2 things are on that I want to record (out for the night/on holidays), or free space it getting tight on one of them. Only problem is you have to exit a game to start the PlayTV app, if you want to schedule it to record, but it will start it's self up if it if you have already scheduled recordings.

If anyone wants one, you need to go to a bigger store, which are listed on the Sainsburys website as stocking computer games/home entertainment... Or get Comet or someone to price match.

No unfortunantly. The little box that comes with it only has 2 inputs, USB to the PS3 (though you can use it with your PC too aparently), and coax for the TV antenna. It does has 2 tuners, so you can record, and watch at the same time, but as you are connected to a TV, which will have it's own tuner, you don't really need it. If you are using it to a PC, the 2nd tuner would be handy, or if your TV doesn't have a DVB tuner.

But I think I can send the output from my TV (gameplay) to my DVD recorder. But then it would be capture on recorder -> copy to DVD -> rip to PC and edit.

But I would add, if you do use it to watch TV (or something you have recorded), and you are signed into PSN, then all the messages still pop onto the screen, so saves you having to having the PS3 on and checking if you buddies are online yet.

And when it starts/stops recording, a message pops up on the top right of the screen reporting it while in gameplay

Not sure what reports me doing while I am using it to others my friends list...?

That is a very good price. Don't really need it, but now i'm tempted to buy one...

I was tempted to buy one a while ago, glad i didnt now though, as my hard drives already nearly full and its not got alot on it, just game saves etc. Would be good with a bigger hard drive tho

You can upgrade the hard drive on the ps3.

Does it only record through an aerial?. I only have satellite reception, my TV aerial is only good for picking up TV shows about white rabbits caught in snowstorms.

Yes, it only has a twin DVB-T tuner.

You can upgrade the hard drive on the ps3.

Reading up on this the other day, you just need to get a bigger 2.5" SATA drive, and replacing it is a piece of cake. You will need to backup what you want to keep on the system.
Or connect an external drive.

Very easy. I have a 250 gig HD on my ps3 at the minute.

I think I have to do the same, as I found I am using it to record stacks already, and I only have a old fat 60Gb unit.
How much did you pay for a 250Gb drive?

I also have the original 60g ps3 just with a 250g hd in it. I think it was £69.99. From ebay I believe.

Any old lap top hard drive will do really as long as it is formatted in line with ps3s.

Nope. It has a DVB-T tuner, ie. Freeview via your antenna.
