Day Skipper course
Discussion
Looking to do my day skipper course in the coming months, i know most reputable places will provide all the requisite kit in terms of foulies etc but what do the sailing fraternity recommend i buy for myself? eg what order should someone start buying kit and any good quality value for money kit recommendations most appreciated!...
What sort of sailing boat you planning on going out on and whereabouts?
Musto Ocean kit is going to be overkill if you are just sailing a little Benetau around the Med.
I am a little rusty on the cold weather kit given where i do my sailing but wouuld suggest -
note - i am a cold weather whoose so have probably way overdone the requirements there ....
other things that i always have with me when on a boat are ...
Small waterproof dube bag containing -

- good grippy deck shoes that will dry easily and quickly
- good medium outer layer coat with hood
- some sailing gloves.
- some waterproof trousers, that work with the jacket.
- some warm undercloaths that do not hold water in.
- suitable towel to put aroud your nenck under the jacket.
- appropriate life jacket (i use the self inflating jobbies)
note - i am a cold weather whoose so have probably way overdone the requirements there ....
other things that i always have with me when on a boat are ...
Small waterproof dube bag containing -
- small first aid kit
- torch with fresh batteries
- good knife
- compass
- GPS (because i already have one)
- handheld VHF (again because i have one)
- spare pair of (optical) glasses, as i would be farqued without me bins!
- sunblock
As John says, it depends on what, where and in what conditions you'll be sailing.
As a dinghy sailor, I'd say the two most important things are a good set of shoes / boots and a decent pair of gloves.
I don't know where you are in the country but Helly Hansen & Musto both have outlet shops in the Bicester Retail village. Most of the stuff they stock is 'last years' colours but it's all perfectly functional but (usually) a fair bit cheaper. I've used Helly Hansen & Musto for years and can recommend both. I've never been a fan of Gill as it doesn't quite seem to do the job.
ETA.. I'd suggest in the following order.
1) Shoes / Boots
2) Decent jacket / coat
3) Gloves
4) Over trousers or waterproof trousers
5) Towel
6) Hat

John's right, though. That's pretty much all you need.

This is what you need:
1) a decent blazer, preferably double-breasted with brass buttons
2) pink trousers, if they look faded and worn so much the better
3) leather loafers
4) a pipe
If you have time to grow it, a white beard will mean extra marks.

to be honest, you dont really come to pistonheads for advice and not expect a multitude of nonsense as well!
to be honest, i dont have much experience at all to be honest, was part of a crew assisting a transfer in nov 09 from falmouth to dartmouth on a starlight 35 (all with rented kit) and planning something similar in july from anglesy to milford haven.
we went through a force seven around salcombe which was really what made me think "this could be an interesting little hobby!", epic swells and some really challenging times for a mostly novice crew. bimbling around the adriatic/med.etc would be nice enough but to be honest, i like a challenge and UK coastal waters seem to offer the sort of thing i would be after.
i'm never going to buy a yacht but i wouldnt mind having the necessary certification/ability to take one out for a week for a bit of fun.
