Time for a Service, help needed

Hi all, car is getting taxed and insured at the end of the month and so I would like to do a service. Now I havent carried out a service for many years (My Ford Fiesta Supersport was the last car I did one to!!). I have a 1989 S1 and I am not sure when it was last done and so I would like to do as thorough job as possible.

I am going to use my local car spares shop and have made a list, would you guys be able to tell me any part numbers or details I would need:

Spark Plugs -
Oil -
Oil Filter -
Air Filter -
New Sump Plug???
New HT Leads??

The car also had a new water pump fitted just before I bought it and so the engine bay looks terrible where the rusty water sprayed everywhere. Any recommendations or tips on cleaning up.

I have moderate skills and all work will be done on my drive

Have a look on the 'useful links' and there are the specs for the items you need. For cleaning engine bays I use Autoglym engine cleaner and some paint brushes. It doesn't smell like gunk and is reasonably good at getting muck off components. Make sure that you don't soak electrics with too much water though.... Good luck. Tony

I just changed the oil in mine and used 15W50 Mobil 1 MS. 15W50 semi or fully synth is probably best but there are a lot of threads with loads of different oil specs on them!

As someone pointed out the engine is a Sierra engine so it doesn't need expensive stuff although I used some as I wanted to treat the engine.

Also make sure the oil filter is a small one (I used a Coopers Z501) as there is absolutely no space to get the damn thing in. I couldn't undo the old one from the top and so did it from the bottom getting oil up my sleeve in the process.

I was going to change the spark plugs too but when I checked them they looked fine so I re gapped them (badly by the sound of the engine at the moment), cleaned them up, and put them back in. Also used the same sump plug and washer, washer looked fine so torqued it up and checked for leaks and their weren't any so I'm happy

If you do the tappets you'll need a set of rocker gaskets - best to get them from ford.
