Can you have 'L' plates without being a learner?
Discussion
After reading the 'could you be a driving instructor' thread someone mentioned their girlfriend is a driving instructor. They also said when the 'L' plates are on they car, they are treated completely different to normal.
I was wondering if it was legal (and moral?) to stick some L-plates on the car, just to see how people treat you.
Would you be comfortable driving with the plates on your car knowing people might tailgate you, overtake in dodgy places and do other dodgy things with prejudice towards you?

I guess it must be legal - after all, driving instructors drive around with L-plates on their cars whilst going to and from lessons. When I was learning, the plates used to be on the shopping car most of the time to save forgetting.
Cue my dad driving off with the dog on the passenger seat with the L-plates still adorning the car, my dog appearing to be teaching my dad how to drive. It made me chuckle.

The Highway Code said:
Vehicles. Any vehicle driven by a learner MUST display red L plates. In Wales, either red D plates, red L plates, or both, can be used. Plates MUST conform to legal specifications and MUST be clearly visible to others from in front of the vehicle and from behind. Plates should be removed or covered when not being driven by a learner (except on driving school vehicles).

Surely this would only happen if you drove like a learner too? I'm sure people only do those things as the learners are driving slowly or badly.RB Will said:

That kinda thing is ok, but if your taking a day off and driving about with it on then im not so sure that is. Her car hasnt got all the vinyls on either so it looks like any other car without the board on top.
Driving about with L plates, not sure really

It is illegal unless you have a driving instructors certification (trainee or fully qualified).
I think the BiB would be very uncharitable to do you for it though, unless you give them some other reason to get upset of course!
