My Vette is up for sale
Discussion
I have just posted my car on the CCCUK website
www.corvetteclub.org.uk/viewtopic.php?p=206#206
If any of you guys know of anyone who is looking for a car then perhaps you could spread the word for me.
I have already contacted the recent postings on this forum.

I knew someone had to ask, so I will come clean now.
The question was "am I holding out for a C6?" The answer is
a) I'm not made of money
b) I can't be without Vette until say October at the earliest
c) I'm not sure I like the C6 front until I see it (mind you I said that about the C5 back end but still bought one)
The real truth is that I am looking for a Yellow convertible and was chasing one until yesterday when the deal fell through. I figure I may be in a better position to go along with cash and that means selling what is arguably the best vette in the UK first (otherwise I will have two!!) and only the chosen few can afford to be in that position. Talking of Vetteheadracer, it was his Z06, particularly after he had installed the Le Mans lights, which set me off looking for a yellow one.

If it's the one on www.carsalez.co.uk it looks wicked. 6-speed too, lovely!
Suggest you buy this one. http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&category=6168&item=2458990747

Nearly 2 dollars to the pound and this one could be on your drive, all SVA work done, taxes paid for about £27k. Just a thought. This one has the optional fat American fitted. LOL.

I am looking around now just to see what is on offer and what the costs are. Ultimately since I will be financing it from a loan or something, I have to calculate if I can afford it from my income. Unfortunately this really means having to wait to end my lease in June and free up some money from that.
Thanks again.
Thanks again.
After checking some US sites can some one check my maths!!
Below are some sample prices of cars....
DDP is shipping (estimate)..
10% on shipping and GB price
VAT on all the 3 giving the total
........1.847...10%.....17.50%
US$.....GB£.....DDP.....DUTY....VAT.....TOTAL
43,950..23,785..1500....2,528...4,867...32,681
48,375..26,180..1500....2,768...5,328...35,776
34,950..18,914..1500....2,041...3,930...26,385
35,950..19,455..1500....2,096...4,034...27,085
I got the prices from
www.dealsonwheels.com/dealers/konkens/
All are 2002 models or younger...
Looking around it seems these are a little cheaper than the uk models which are about 1999/2000 models for about 26k...
All I think I am missing from these figures are SVA in the UK, and US taxes .... Does anyone know if you pay sales tax on those figures or not

Your figures are close but shipping from Baltimore is only $880 though you have to add on marine insurance which works on 1.5% of the value.
In addition, you pay fees of about £300 when it gets to the docks this side in unpacking, agency and clearance fees. A friend of mine had his SVA work done for £168 (Camaro).
If you have a look at www.kerbeck.com, you'll see they do cheaper Corvettes. The only sure bet is the Z06 which comes fully optioned to a large degree with HUD and so forth. US Vettes are variable and some have the FE1 base suspension and some have Z51 sports suspension. The option packs on the base Vettes can radically affect the price which is why the Z06 is pretty much a known quantity.
Another good bet is the 99/00 hardtop which was supposed to be the sports version before the advent of the Z06 which took the bodystyle for it's own in 2001. The hardtop came with all the goodies as standard - the uprated suspension and sway bars, better dampers, performance axle and M6 gearbox.
As I'm finding, the difficulty is getting your hands on one. Z06's at the bargain end of the scale ($36000)tend to get snapped up very quickly.
You can do the SVA work yourself. There is a manual on line somewhere but I ordered a Euro-set of Vette lights from Ecklers which are plug and play and the fog light and side repeaters are straightforward stiff you can do yourself.

It is undoubtedly cheaper in the US but only for later models and years. I did a lot of comparisons between Germany and the US. The strength of the Euro made the German cars expensive and you can get a much newer car in the US because the dollar is weak.
When you get to older C5's, the exchange rate doesn't help because the shipping, import duty and VAT bump the car up to about £17000 pre-SVA. The only advantage is they're often low mileage. Choice is limited to the area around most ports otherwise you're looking at transport costs across the USA as well as shipping.
The difficulty with the US is if you go yourself, you have to find cars, view cars and then get the car (assuming you can find one)to the port after dealing with the paperwork up to 5 days before and you have to book the shipping etc. Too much hassle for me so I'm using a guy who vetteheadracer also used to inspect cars that I find on Autotrader and if they're good, he'll buy and ship it for you. That way, you can take your time and select the car you want.
Some cars are real bargains but they don't hang round for long and most sellers will sell to people in the US who are there and won't give them any hassle about paperwork. They don't trust people who say they'll send money and export the car. So having an agent is a good idea. Obviously, the higher the price, the more choice you have. There are plenty of very low mileage cars and finding a mint C5 or C5 Convertible isn't hard and with an agent doing the work, all you have to do is pay the money.
You do have to remember that their "2001 model year" cars were launched in September 2000 so establish what year the car was first registered, it often accounts for differences in prices.
I hope I've found my Z06 and hope to finalise it this weekend. If you need any ideas on prices, e-mail me and I'll give you an idea of what they go for. The main site is www.autotrader.com but there are others like Vettetrader and local listings for the State you select.
The pain is obviously getting it cleared through customs this end, collecting the car, booking the SVA test and doing the work but there are plenty of centres who do it all the time. Fog light plus illuminated switch, side repeaters and rear orange indicators are the main items as I think the headlamps dip down. Rear lights are easy as you can order a Euro light kit from Ecklers in advance and they just replace the stock items with a simple plug and play kit.
