Careful where you leave it - filler caps

I went a garage by recommendation to sort out my high idle today, and he said he had an S3 (I know the car, was the first TVR I had the pleasure to be in) in a couple months ago with the engine shot. Turns out somebody poured sugar/ golden syrup into the obviously unlockable filler cap and killed the engine.



Luckily my car is in a locked garage, but just a word of warning! Incredible what people do isn't it.

Dirty trick but got to be a "one in a million", hasn't it ? Much higher risk must be having fuel syphoned/nicked ?

How many oiks are going to buy (steal ?) a bag of sugar then go looking for a car without locking fuel cap (not many nowadays)? Maybe jealeous, maybe owner had upset someone ?

finally, obviously wouldn't do fuel system much good but can't see how it would wreck engine ?

I agree difficult clean up and fuel injection system overhaul required as I wouldn't expect the sugar to make its way through the filters and injectors and all the way into the engine given some of the tolerances (depends on solubility of course and I'm not an expert in sugar despite consuming alot ), but this should be covered by insurance as it is "criminal damage" and not a "breakdown" unless he did it himself

Have to say - agree with Mark. If can be proved as 'malicious damage' & you are fully comprehensive on the insurance then sugar in the fuel & the resulting damage caused should be covered.

It's certainly criminal.

This type of attack is unlikley to be random, it sounds targeted (as posted above, there wouldn't be much chance of a casual attack by someone who just bought a bag of sugar!).
