whats the PH consensus on washing machines folks ?

Cheapo Beko in a rental property of mine appears to have developed a nasty noise. I suspect the bearings. Tempted to buy a new one as there are a few people living there and it might be wise not to skimp.

I have read to stay away from beko, indesit and hotpoint. Is this true ? I gather that Zanussi are supposed to be better quality without paying top dollar ?

or is it all a myth ? should i just treat it as a consummble and get a refurbed hotpoint for £100 quid and expect to replace it with another in 12 months or so ?

I'm waiting for the usual crew to pile up saying 'Miele' hehe

I can't recommend a make but the idea of buying a cheap s/h one and simply replacing it when it breaks is interesting. Last year I sold a Hotpoint washer/dryer in very good condition on eBay for £55.

My brother used to assemble them at a company called Creda before manufacture was moved to Poland.

His advice was to avoid Indist but Hotpoint were good machines.

I've got one (a factory second - slight mark but otherwise perfectly fine) and it hasn't let me down in 8 years.

My mum has a Hotpoint too which gets a fair bit of hammer, think its been going perfectly for the 5 or so years she has had it.

Have had a budget LG for the past two years. Been perfect so far. Used twice a day every day.

Miele are probably the best you can buy but budget will be blown!

Bosch here. Can't say it has never gone wrong in 10 years, but its cost relatively little to keep going.

Zanussi, ours never failed, got it as damaged stock 7 years ago(dent in side), never went wrong and was in use a lot with new born baby! Sold it for £40 too when we moved & no doubt still going strong. Had a hotpoint-utter st that chewed socks! Thought i was going mad until i found a lost sock wrapped around the drum INSIDE!

Alternative is to go for the cheapest you can find and buy an extended warranty.

£230 and forget about it for 3 years.

I think ours is a Hotpoint.

When I was buying a washing machine a few yearsabck I soon realised it was foolhardy to expect the kind of decent quality you would get 10-15 years ago unless you were willing to pay some serious money.

It probably makes more economic sense to buy one for 250 and kill it and then just buy another one.

Have a look at Fagor, made in the same factory as De Dietrich and comes with a 5 year warranty and very reasonable on price.

Slightly OT, but my Mum recently bought a new washing machine (don't know what make though) and she said that they now only have a cold water feed. As I'm redoing my kitchen at the moment I'd be interested to confirm this as it will at least save me having to re route two pipes to the new positon for the (new) washing machine.

I'm hoping it lasts more than a year as the last one was a simple Hotpoint job that has only needed a £15 door handle in 5 years plus. The new one is a Siemens due to some staff discount we can get. It's only that the new one has to be intergrated otherwise we'd have kept this one (or rather I'd have kept this one wink ).

i take your point about Miele, I have a Miele vacuum cleaner and its been fabulous

failing that, theres a chap in uxbridge how has some refurbed/serviced Hotpoints for 110 quid. he may even take my damaged beko in for part ex

After tons of research I opted for the more expensive one (last longer) and got a Miele

Don't notice any difference apart from most washes are still soaking after every load so have to put on a second final spin cycle each time..pain in the backside.

I'd probably opt for a cheapo one now

Maybe you are loading it up too much?

Do you have the same problem with a smaller load?

Please do report back, would be interesting to know how much overloading the drum affects spin-drying.
