I'm about to start up a Chim 4.5 which hasn't run for 6 months. What precautuions should I take before turning the key to make sure it doesn't just go bang or make horrible seizing noises ?

Take the HT lead off of the coil, take all the spark plugs out, and take the fuse out of the fuel pump then spin the engine over until the oil pressure light goes out.
Should be fine then.

Or alternatively, prime the oil pump before starting up. If Andy's method does not result in the oil light going out within a few seconds then you should prime the pump or you may damage the engine anyway.

Put some fresh fuel in, the petrol that has been standing may have 'gone off' a bit. Check the oil level and check in the filler cap for signs of condensation, you may need top change it as well.
