Hi all, I'm looking to buy a new mattress for my bed. To be honest I never put much thought into the purchase of my current bed/mattress, but it now seems to have sagged a bit showing two dips where I've been lying, and where the other half had been lying. Now upon looking on the good old internet, the vast ammount of different mattresses is making my decision difficult to say the least! I've always been told that you should buy the best mattress you can, by not scrimping on the price. But these days the same type/style of mattress can differ in price by hundreds of pounds form one supplier to the next!! Are there genuine bargains out there, or are the cheaper ones inferior in quality?? I'm being pushed into buying one of the memory foam mattresses, these seem to be very popular just now and get good reviews. I'm looking for a super king size, can anyone give me some more information as to what I should be looking for?? Any help or information will be appreciated.

What size did you buy?? How much was it if you don't mind me asking?

I'm finding such a difference in prices upon looking, it's stressing me out so much I can't get a good nights sleep!! Lol.

I've tried two £400+ mattresses in six months. One lasted 4 months before subsiding, the other lasted 48 hours. Both came from Sleepmasters who are ducking and diving and I may have to take them to court to get redress. Their view is 'you chose it, tough'

I'm expecting delivery of a 'normal' mattress (£160 from Argos, 30-day no-quibble return) and looking forward to it.

DO NOT BUY FROM SLEEPMASTERS - they are a steel trap. Once you've bought the mattress, you're stuck with it; their Customer Services are polite but utterly unhelpful, and if you get as far as the 'independent technician' he'll write a bent report to wriggle out of the warranty. They are interested only in your money.

I thought it was sensible to go to a place where you can lie on the mattresses before deciding. The catch is that then if there's any problem with it, you can't take it back. Conversely Argos and Tesco will give you 30 days to try it (with Tesco leave the plastic bag on) because you're buying blind. IKEA will let you exchange a mattress you're not happy with for another one from their range.

In short, buying blind is actually better because you get more redress in case of problems. Oh and did I mention DO NOT BUY FROM SLEEPMASTERS?

Sleepmasters?

Don't they have a number of brands in the UK?

+1 to memory foam, in my case a double sized topper for £50 from argos, warm yes and very comfortable, but still has the support of the main mattress, I just dont have to feel the springs smile

Yes - all of these: http://www.sukf.co.uk/ Avoid them all.

Steinhoff is an agressive South African company interested only in profit and share price, witness http://www.steinhoffinternational.com/

Odd that they mention 'customer satisfaction' though.

Well, I've had one of these http://www.coolflex.co.uk/coolflex_gold.html for about two months now and it's been excellent so far, and it's a decent price too.

Feels quite firm at first, but really comfy and getting a good nights sleep regularly. I tend to shuffle around a bit at night and the good thing with this is Mrs. Monkey Nuts doesn't get bounced around while I'm moving!! No roll together either.

I bought a memory foam matress for about £400. I quite liked it but I did feel embedded into it so rolling over took some effort. It was also quite warm. Her indoors found it hurt her elbows so it had to go. Bit of a bugger as I lost £300 on that. Effing women, they now nowt about our financial pain!

Memory foam is very comfortable but gets really hot.

My vote is for Hypnos: www.hypnos.ltd.uk i reckon they are the best although not the cheapest, they make all varieties & styles, you can also have them zipped in the middle to make the bigger matresses easier to turn.

I read a lot on moneysavingexpert, there are long threads. Essentially there are quite a few well known brands which are made by the same companies and are not that good quality, apparently they are more machine-made and don't last as long.

I eventually got a Kozeesleep Night Sleep for £259 (king size) and it's very good, although I've only been using it for 5 months so far. Then again I had previously been sleeping on an old single mattress that was far too short for me and always left me with an aching back.

I can't stand memory foam frown

For someone who is generally nice and warm in bed (as most blokes are), the extra heat is just too much. And it's very strange not being on a sprung mattress, I didn't like it one bit.

Unfortunately, with the back problems I've had, I have to be fussy about beds - £150 from Argos just won't cut it. For what it's worth, Silentnight 'Miracoil' is rubbish. Pocket sprung mattresses are way better, and the more springs the better too.

one option that's a nice compromise is a sprung mattress with a topper. Again, memory foam isn't very nice IMO, but all the main companies do their own twist on rubber/foam compounds, some of which make very comfortable sleeping. I'm just trying to find the £700 I need to get the one I want... yikes

I've recently bought a Sleep to Live mattress.

http://www.sleeptolive.com/

When we entered the store we found the machine for the mattresses. You input details like sleep position, any pains you may have and then lie down on a test bed. This then pumps in air and takes measurements. Once it's done it recommends you a firmness of mattress for you.

I was blue firmness and the missus was green. So we purchased a split firmness mattress that comes with a 10 year guarantee and a 40 day no quibble return policy if you find you dont like the choice you've made.

We bought the 500 series one and for a King Size bed that came to just over £1,000 from Bensons beds.

Best purchase I've ever made. The mattress is amazingly comfy and I've not had a bad nights sleep on it yet. The missus who for years has woken up with back, shoulder and neck pain has almost been transformed by the sleep she is getting. Can't recommend it enough.

had something similair at benson beds, would have been a new bed and would lose the storage space under my bed, so declined as they did not do matresses for some reason

Was Bensons that I bought it from. There was no requirment to purchase a new bed though. They do the full bed system but buying the base is not compulsory. Salesman must have been having you on.

we had a memory foam and ended up with really bad backs, because It holds you in place at night and wont let your back relax and streach, also when turning over at night you put more effort into it as you have sunk into the mattress, we now have a harrison mattress which was made with one side firmer than the other,at no extra cost.
You need to try a few and see if they can asses you on the mattress,we went to the birmingham http://www.totalbackcare.co.uk/ and they sorted us out.

A recommendation for Vi Spring - "traditional" construction, very very comfortable, and last a long time, too.

Ultimately though, there's no substitute for going to a proper bed shop and trying some to see what works for you.

cheers

have to admit that it was a very nice mattress, got an argos metal bar / slats thing across the metal frame, means I can store several boxes of wine under the bed, along with some tent poles, felling axe and other sharp pointy things smile

Buying the base is not compulsory but if you buy mattress only then the 28 day 'comfort guarantee' doesn't apply - you're stuck with it. This is in Sleepmasters' T&Cs.

However if you have info to the contrary please PM me asap!
