have you got a spark at the plug?
fuel at the injectors?

After a few attempted starts I can smell fuel, and it does sound like
it's trying to fire. Will check for a spark.
Is it possible that an air bubble around the ECU temp sensor, giving a
false temperature reading, could causing this problem by overfueling?

Personally i'd check all the simple stuff first.
Check you're getting a spark at all the plugs. Check the leads, the distributor, rotor arm etc.

Of course, i'll check the obvious stuff first.
It's just that the car was running perfectly saturday afternoon
then overnight something happened to stop it running? I can't
understand how that works! Pretty sure I didn't dislodge anything
while I was changing the rad.

I know this will not help solve your problem but back when I had a V8S it decided to just die on the dual carriageway at 70 mph.Subsequent investigation found that the immobiliser had cut in and the fuel shut off valve designed to work after an accident had operated at the same time.If they can do that then anything can happen overnight so may be worth resetting the cut off unit just in case.

The go / no go nature is common with ignition amp failure. Many of us carry a spare to try rather than faff around. Don't assume its the amp and not the wiring to the amp if you have the later version remote from the dizzy.

Spend has a point there, my Griff displayed those problems once when the Ignition amp came loose on the plenum housing bolt (where it earths), worth a check.

The plugs are soaking (with petrol)so i'll fit a new set
I checked for a spark with an old plug, there is one
but it seems a bit weak

Hi John
Dont know if the Chims are the same as T350s but we had a similar problem with flyings car on friday which we traced to a blown fuse on the coil circuit, sure you will have but if not check all fuses on ecu/ignition/fuel pump with a tester as they dont always look as if they have blown.
Hope you get sorted soon.

Another one to check is the rotor arm. I had similar and it took ages to track down. If it is non-standard Lucas, it can just stop working

Pulled the fuel pump relay and the car started
and ran for a few seconds.

fitted the new plugs yet

Sounds abit odd if it started when you pulled the relay out, shouldnt do anything without the relay in place.
Have you tried putting a different relay in the fuel pump location/can you hear the pump prime when you turn on the ignition?

There would enough petrol in the combustion chambers to fire
the engine if the state of the plugs is anything to go by!
The relay just stops the pump supplying any more fuel to
my,already flooded,engine
