Elise brakes. Problem or trait?
Discussion
Have noticed recently that sometimes if car is left outside that the first few applications of the brake do very little. They have always come back to normal operation but has been a bit scary a few times. Is this just a case of yes they do that and learn to apply the brakes and keep testing until it goes away (about five applications) or is it something that should be able to be fixed? Any advice greatly appreciated and sorry if ths could be found via a search but am on iPhone and cannot use the search function on the mobile version of pistonheads.

what car is it?Would that be normal for the miles? I heard that they were light on the brakes and I know I depends on use but I dont drive that fast as still getting used to the car. Is there a quick way to tell without taking the wheels off. Or do I need to bring my service forwards. I initally assumed that it was due to the layer of rust on the brakes and the need to wear this away but I have no idea whether this would or wouldn't be an issue.
Thanks for the advice so far.

Should be serviced at 9k miles anyway....
Just sounds like your discs are getting a little rusted up(with all the salt,s
t and water on the roads),my fronts have been binding regularly and my car's garaged.
Until the weather cheers up just rest your left foot on the brakes for the first few yards until the rust gets taken off, otherwise just do some fairly hard stops until the same happens.
My company VW has been doing the same also btw...

They definitely got stronger around the 1000 mile mark. Probably took a while as bedding engine in and as said driving the car carefully until used to it. I have just noticed this issue the past to days it's been used. Was left overnight both times a mate is suggesting could be the layer of rust on the disc and was wondering myself f it was possible that the discs had ice on them ( but would of thought that would of gone during the first application). Not sure about the pads being the problem due to being worn as wouldn't this cause the brakes always to be poor. Whereas what happens is the first time there applied they hardly feel applied then get steadily better (I just go a few metres then apply again and so on) and then around the fifth time they are back to normal. It needs a service late march ish so could always bring that forwards if needed. But sat here pondering possible causes and worrying about carrying on driving in case it is the pads as don't want to ruin the disks but it is my only car and need to go to work all ths week.

ahh this sounds good. Current mileage is about 9014 but was told that first service should be 9000 miles from the check over service from buying new which would put it at about 9800 miles. Was told this by stratstone is this incorrect?Just sounds like your discs are getting a little rusted up(with all the salt,s

As i said, dont worry about your brakes they'll be fine, just ask the for pads and discs to be checked at the service.
Aaaarrrrggghhh so now I have to try and get it serviced bloody quick. I even checked that twice with them but they were adamant that as I brought it into them for the post sale service at 800 miles that the first service was 9000+ the 800 miles. Let's hope they can fit it in this week for me then.

Mine's exactly the same. Funnily enough it has the same mileage (!) but they've been like this all through the winter. My pads are quite well worn though (it has a turbo conversion and has done a couple of track days). Once you've had thet first experience of nearly overshooting the first T-junction you arrive at you get used to being a bit more cautious as you start off!! Like yours, after a couple more applications all is normal again.
You might want to check the cross-drill holes in the discs, the charactersitic seems more pronounced when they're clogged up (might just be imagining this though). Hope this helps.
