I`m refurbing the front of the car and now have a little snag. I`ve removed all the nuts and bolts on the timing cover and it`s now loose, but it will not lift off the engine block.

I think you have to take the bottom pulley off first as the end of the crank pokes through the timing cover (I think)
cheers.....Tony..

steve, if you have all of the bolts out, and there is nothing on the front pulley shaft it may just need some gentle persuation, and tap with a mallet, or even a screwdriver blade under a suitable part of the cover face to give it a start, the old gasket may have just glued it all together over time.

I`ve got a sierra v6 manual somewhere, I`ll dig it out.

Hiya bruv, I`ve got a V6 book, it says to unbolt the cover and recover the gasket. I`ve done this, but the thermostat housing in the block is above the timing cover so it has to be tilted foward, this I can do. it`s that loose. It will not lift out though, I wondered if I`ve missed anything.

There are 2 studs in the lower face of the timing cover that go through the sump. You'll need to remove the nuts from underneath which I'm guessing you've done it as it is loose as you describe. I'm also assuming that you have removed the crank pulley. Having done all that it still doesn't want to come out so your options are either to drop the sump or do what I did and shorten the studs that go through the front edge of the sump.

Steve

Tozer is right - the cover has to come off the end of the crankshaft, so you need to take the crankshaft pulley off.

Yes I know, my chassis was manky back then, mainly as a result of oil flying out of that oil seal! - that was January 2006!

Hi Guys,

Whilst we are on this sort of subject and some of you may have pictures to hand.I've heard of the crank position sensor on many cars but can someone point it out to me on the V6.I've looked in many manuals but cant seem to find it.

Many Thanks
Neil

I stripped a scrap engine to get cam out and even with all bolts out cover was difficult to get off because there's a thick seal between it and the sump. Think you'll need to sort of lift cover a bit (easier if you get oil seal out). Can't see though how you'll get it back together without damaging crank seal or having oil leaks where it joins sump, unless you can refit cover then tap new oil seal in ?

Proper way would be to lower sump, fit cover loosly, slide pulley on (well oiled so seal is not dry when engine started) to centralise seal then tighten bolts !

HTH and good luck !

you would only have a crank position sensor if you were running mappable ignition of some sort, the ford v6 is running on the distributor so no crank sensors needed.

I'm not so sure... The 2.9 Ford engine has ecu-controlled ignition and fuel maps, so you would expect that a CPS would be required - but I seem to recall reading years ago that it doesn't have one, but I can't remember why. You might be right, maybe it takes its timing straight from the distributor, but I don't think so. I think the distributor only provides a spark-out signal to the ECU.

The 24V Cosworth had a CPS on a toothed wheel behind the front pulley, but AFAIK, the 12V doesn't have one.

I do know that in 150,000 miles in a Granada, and now 30,000 miles in the S, I never found it. My wife says she's not surprised, but I don't understand what that means.

As the point of ignition is determined by the setting of the distributor, I dont think it requires a Crank Position Sensor, I may be wrong but what purpose would it serve?
