I have been pondering the costs of ditching the M3 and switching to a two car combo. Something very dull with high MPG for work miles (which have recently increased) and an Elise for fun.

I have always fancied an Elise (driven a S1 111s only) and I am thinking of finding an older car nearer the 10K end of the spectrum and then, in time, do an engine swap to a supercharged Honda (plus all the ancillary upgrades that would require). The aim would be a fast road / track day toy. Ignoring all the pros and cons of which engine conversion (I have scoured every bit of info I can on the subject) one thing I do not know about that springs to mind is insurance. I have no experience of modded car insurance and was wondering what sort of hike to expect for such a radical conversion.

Doing a quick scan of insurers a standard 111s is roughly the same to insure as the M3 (about £800). Obviously many factors will affect the costs but as rough guide what would you expect / or have experienced in terms of % increase? Also who would be best to try for quotes, as I am assuming most mainstream insurers are likely to be uncompetitive?

Thanks in advance!

Jim

realistically, you need to be talking to specialist brokers, none of the majors direct will understand this.

your history will have more of a bearing on it...

Some people pay ~£600 some a lot more....

Cheers for those. Was just trying to get a rough feel for it for now. I will give some of your suggestions a call and get a proper idea.

I would put it on a limited mileage policy, I live in a good postcode, 31, and as far as the insurers are concerned perfect insurance history (5yrs protected NCB, no accidents or convictions in 5yrs). It would also be garaged (as long as my planned house move goes to plan). Hopefully all the above should mean it won't be too painfull!

It's obviously worth bearing on mind what each of the insurers will offer you in terms of track day cover.

Some will do 4 trackdays free others (Heritage) will do all UK days as long as it is with a reconised club.

My situation is similar to yours - just a bit older - S1 Honda Elise, paying about £650 with CCI, limited milage, 4 track days included.

A Honda conversion was actually over a 100 cheaper than a standard S from Richard Egger!!

Jim, welcome and good choice. You won't regret it. The Honda cars are immensely good fun. I had an S2 Honda'd 111S and had great quotes from Heritage and CCI.
