I hate these new energy efficient lightbulbs. According to the side of the numerous boxes of Phillips bulbs I have, a new 11 Watt bulb is equivalent to the old-style 60 Watt ones.

Well, I say rowlocks to that - I've got one on in my office/spare bedroom now and it's so bloody dark in here, I may as well not bother having it on!

Stupid, stupid things! Anyone know where I can get a large stock of the old 60 Watt Pearl bayonet bulbs? laugh

New standard coming in later in the year to tell you how much light it emits (rather than the incandescent equivalent) so we will have more numbers to remember.

Yes, i'm feeling your pain. They're nowhere near powerful/bright enough.
I'm currently using at least two (11w plus 14w one) in order to read.

And you only seem to be able to get an SES screw on candle bulbs. I don't want candle bulbs, half the lights in my house use golf ball bulbs with SES screws.

Yes - EON gave away millions to meet 'emissions targets'. Except that they didn't give them away of course, you paid for them in your bill somewhere. I gave mine to a neighbour.

Anyway, I have given this 'low energy' matter a great deal of consideration, weighed up all possibilities, and my conclusion is 'It's all utter wk'.

I remember radio 4 did something about the equialency of energy saving lightbulbs, and said it is more like half to a third to get an equivalent, so a 60W needs a 22W to replace it the equivalency was done with frosted bulbs rather than clear.

Well, I switched totally to CFs about three years ago. Some of the really cheap ones blew quite quickly, but now I replace one about every six months - which is OK as there are 55 in total.

In many cases I prefer them to incandescents, much easier on the eyes at night - and when they've warmed up the light output in most cases is better. Two x 11 watts are excellent for a 4 x 8 lounge, and when I find an 8w landing light has been on all day I think ummmmm, 1/2p.

Our house is an energy-light-bulb free zone. And I intend to keep it that way.

I wonder how ong it'll take the tts in parliament to ban the 50w halogens

60W incandescent bulbs should still be available in the shops, it's only 100W and over which have been banned at the moment. I'm not sure when the 60Ws vanish as well - probably sometime this year I'd guess.

I've been chucking 2 or 3 of the 60Ws in my basket at the supermarket every week recently, getting in a good stock before they vanish as well.

The really weedy ones don't do it for me, especially as we've got dimmer switches in all the bedrooms, the lounge and the dining room.

There are, however, some decent ones which are about 30% more efficient. I think they're made by Phillips? They look and feel and work just like normal lightbulbs, but shops are allowed to sell them in their eco-friendly section, because they use less than a normal bulb.

Homebase certainly stock them.

Massive scam if you ask me. Homebase selling the 11w Phillips bulbs for 10p each. I bought a box of them. You would be better off lighting a candle lie the good old days

If its all to do with saving the planet etc etc, why do they still make GREEN bottles for wine, as far as I know, they do not recycle green glass, not sure why.

That being the case, why bloody make it?

Not to worried about the slightly dimmer lamps, but lets reduce the wattage on some of the newer cars around, like bloody searchlights, and when they are slightly offset, blinded aint the word.

Stupid, isn't it.

And, if they do ban 60W before LEDs get mainstream, I'll need more of them.

These guys are pretty good if you want to stock up: http://www.thelightbulb.co.uk/
