A US hacker who gained notoriety for unlocking Apple's iPhone as a teenager has told BBC News that he has now hacked Sony's PlayStation 3 (PS3).
George Hotz said the hack, which could allow people to run pirated games or homemade software, took him five weeks.
He said he was still refining the technique but intended to post full details online soon.
The PS3 is the only games console that has not been hacked, despite being on the market for three years.

I hope Sony deal with this that same way M/S do

Next console update, put something in it that looks for the hack signature. Report that back to XBL, add to a banned console list et voila, one offline only console. Fair enough, and accepted by pretty much everyone (who then buy a second console to hack, keeping one untainted for XBL)Employ them?

He has said he doesn't condone piracy, but he doesn't like the way this incredible piece of hardware was released and noone can use it to its full potential.
Good on him anyway. I thought these people were usually snapped up by the companies as "security advisors" or something though?

k up my gaming is when it gets frustrating. I would imagine that people can also cheat using hacked 360'sHopefully sony will nip this in the bud and it won't have a great affect on any gaming.
I can see the financial benefit to you when you can buy a copied game for £3 instead of £30.
Trouble is if everybody does this, does this not F*ck up the gaming industry?
Isn't it best to read the game reviews, save and buy only the decent games and then play it lots intead of buying lots of games cheaply and not play them much as its 'easy come easy go'.
All the extra cash the game developers get from legally purchased games goes back into making new games with bigger and better budgets so we all benefit.
I personally hope that Sony update the software so this crack expires as its bad for the industry.

?. All of us on PH (Hopefully) Pay for our games, why should people like you get them for free.I used to get a lot more pirated stuff as a student, but now I pay for the lack of hassle. I even have a legit windows license now.

Why should sony unlock their console and let others build games for it?? they paid X million to make it!! Some of you chaps need to recognise that opening the platform and playing copied games are entirely different.
The open platform will allow the use of the amazing PS3 hardware to do amazing things. Things that would take a very very high end PC to achieve.
Playing copied games is bad, as it means that the games industry won't be able to produce the next load of games as there will be no reveune. However can't you lot see that opening the hardware to run other software is seperate?
E.g. Say you bought a high end gaming PC by Alienware (or whatever) and it would only play certain games but wouldn't play video or music or share files on my home network, or other things that the hardware was capable of. Would you be annoyed that you'd paid for hardware in a box that was capable of more but which you were not allowed to unleash? You own that processor, that's yours. But you can't do what you want to with it becasue it's been screwed down and limited in functionality.
It's not about copying games.
People seem not to have a problem with buying a mobile phone and then 'unlocking' it becasue they want to switch network. (I.e. they want to do something that the hardware can do, but the function was removed by the manufacturer. Well, same here, the function is being turned back on and the hardware can do all the things it's capable of.)
