Brighton Tattoo Convention
Discussion
Had a great day down at the Brighton Tattoo Convention today at Brighton Racecourse. First off all it was awesome to see my photos on display in the Art Show, which had a whole building of it's own at the event.

I even got my name on the posters..

Massive thanks to Woody and Lisa Bolton who organised the event and the Art Show. Lisa had some of her own work on show which was fantastic...

Sharing gallery space with me on the upstairs floor was the Sugar Project, which is an art event involving awe inspiring tattoo artists and artists from all over the country and hopefully the world! They have hand painting 50 skulls to be auctioned on ebay with all proceeds going to the urgent appeal to prevent the Woking Hospice from closing. The first auction will start on March 22nd 2010 and the project will run for 5 days, 10 skulls being auctioned hourly each day.

I ran into some of the guys from Volkszone at the show, including Cherry who had a rather unusual tattoo to add to her collection.

It was a little like walking though a hospital surgery in the artists halls, listening to the needle guns firing as skin was pierced and art created.

Any comments on the frames/presentation of the prints?
If I'm honest, I didn't notice the frames when I saw those pictures above. I was more drawn to the photos themselves. That said, upon looking at them again, I agree with the other posters that they're a bit 'fussy' for the subject matter and don't really sit with the theme or period of the subject matter.
But then, frames are a gloriously subjective matter and there's a big difference between framing them for an exhibition to make them stand out and what people might choose to have in their room at home.
I assume that if you're selling prints you do un-framed ones ? When I lived in the US there were quite a few major art / craft exhibitions with some really good photographers selling their wares. They usually offered a mix of framed and mounted but un-framed pictures which you could take away there and then, with some of the larger ones (A1 sort of size) being special order.
Thanks for the feedback guys, appreciate it.
Graham, they're all black and white with black frames and ivory mounts.
For this show I just had the framed prints on show for sale but yes I do intend to sell mounted prints without frames too. When I have sold prints before I've noticed that often people do a terrible job of framing them themselves, but I guess I need to give them the option - me being a control freak LOL
It sounds like going forward I need to offer a couple of choices of frame and unframed for sale but for the purposes of exibition I'll continue to keep to one frame for consistancy.
Funny enough the feedback I got on Sunday was "Great photos. Where did you get the frames, they look great?"
Maybe they did distract from the photos

Love the prints and the frames nick. Your stuff is stunning. Agree with others that maybe simpler frames might be a good option to offer when selling them, but personally, I love the frames as you've displayed them, I've been looking for that exact style of frame for some of my own prints. Are they tailor made frames or standard off the shelf items?
A few friends went down to Brighton - sounded like a good do. I tried to take a few shots down at Tattoo Freeze in Telford a couple of weeks ago. It's actually very difficult to get decent, intimate photos without feeling like a pain when you don't know the subjects. Yours are loads better than mine! Your display looked great as well, I'll have to check with my pals whether they saw it.
