I don't know if it's just me, my TV settings or the game itself but on certain maps I really have trouble seeing enemies!!

The main culprit is Estate which also happens to be my least favourite map. I've noticed it on derail a few times and Underpass is horrible for me too.

I've seen plenty of videos on youtube where people are running around with a regular assault rifle or something, with a regular RDS or holographic sight, picking off enemies from miles away that I can't even see. It's especially a problem if enemies are in windows or prone. I understand that snipers are camouflaged to an extent but I should still be able to see them from a reasonable distance right?

Do I need to adjust something on my TV? It's a 32" Hitachi of some description. I'm playing on Xbox and using a HDMI cable. It defaults to 1080p and enables "game mode", which then doesn't let me adjust brightness or contrast. If I disable "game mode" I can adjust those settings. I found I had to do that for GTA4 because at night time it was pretty much pitch black.

I'm slightly short sighted in one eye but that really shouldn't affect what I see on the TV that's 3-4 feet from my face should it?

Well that's where the camoflauge you choose to wear makes a difference...

Stand in the shadows in your "blue tiger" camo and you melt into the background quite nicely but wear that out in the snow of derail and you're asking for it...

On a 32" you should be able to see pretty well, but can you see as much as someone with a 42"?

I've got a 42" and I still miss things, also watch kill cams if you can...

often they dont spot the person, but their movement.

All the avatars int he game have twitches, they'll check their gun or look to the left quickly... something to make them seem more human.

That's what gets noticed.

Thing is I never had a problem in COD4 and I'm a veteran of FPS games - I know what to look for it's just that I can't actually see enemies.

Quite a lot of kill cams I've watched - I can't even see myself from across the map but I've been killed by someone who can. I should definitely be able to see myself because I know exactly where to look..

As for TV size - it shouldn't make much of a difference as at 1080p it's going to be the same amount of pixels surely? Plus you have to move your eyes more to scan across a larger TV.

I found myself doing pretty well on a pretty small CRT TV at my mates house.

Erm...isn't the camo pattern applicable just to the gun you're wielding?

I'm sure everyone on Sub-base, for example, is in matching white clobber or Seal wetsuits, depending on the side.

on a bigger tv everything is going to be bigger so easier to see. most of these yank kids are probably on 50 inch screens or even bigger.

Remember they could always be using thermal sights, perfect for stupidly long kills on wasteland.

I always thought the 'camo' should be changed per map too.

There alot more 'hiding' spots on this than on COD4, every day I find a bullet coming from somewhere new and have to investigate. If you want to be a sad git set up and private match with a mate, go through all the options till you find the best combos. Also a good way to hunt out those prime hiding/tactical/camping* places.

  • delete as applicable considering how you feel about these places

It all comes with practice and knowledge.

My mate was watching me play the other day on derail, as I was picking off distant enemies with my Red Dot equipeed FAL he asked me how I had actually spotted any of them as he hadn't even seen any actual enemies.

Truth is half the time you don't actual see an enemy, you either predict were they are going to be (when you know the maps well enough) or you spot a glint movement or just shoot were the tracer rounds are coming from.

Also I have been using FMJ to earn the extended mags and I'm often getting 10-20 bullet penetration kills per map as I know exactly were people sit in the building and just fire 2-3 shots through the wall and kill them without ever seeing then.

The FAL w/ FMJ and Red Dot is your freind.

Surely SCAR-H(Good sight but low power) or M16(Poor sight but good power) with Heartbeat and FMJ +Stopping Power would be more effective at shooting through walls?

As mentioned above if you learn the maps then you don't need the hearbeat sensor for through wall shots. Stopping power helps but the FAL doesn't really need it.

The Red Dot is for long range accuracy.

Even through a wall the FAL is almost always a one shot kill weapon and you want a single shot weapon so you can spread the magazine better across a room if you are 'fishing' for a kill.

My best is 19 pentration kills on Scrapyard.

I prefer the Rambo approach, fill the building with lead, reload the next belt of ammo and empty that too wink

Sometimes if you see a flash of fire from the other side of the map, just take a potshot, sometimes you get lucky and a kill !!

I think people are making assumptions that I'm new to the game but I'm really not.

I've played for over 5 days on my gamertag and probably about a day on my mate's account when the game was released and I stayed at his house. I know the maps, spawn points, etc and i'm not new to FPS games at all. This isn't a lack of skill it's something that's stopping me from seeing enemies - be it my eyesight or tv settings or something else.

Are you running it through HDMI on a HD TV? I found that makes a Helluva difference to seeing movement.

In terms of maps like derail (any map with snow) you really need a Thermal scope as a rule to get a long range shot in, though there are a couple of spots you can see quite a way.

As I said you don't really 'see' enemies, most kills are from spotting a flick of movement or a hint of muzzle flash.

I get the feeling you are looking for enemies when you should be looking for evidence of enemies (radar blips, muzzle flash etc etc), if you're just wandering about hoping to spot someone then they have already spotted you.

I prefer the regular scope or ACOG on derail as the thermal just makes people into white blobs against white snow. Thermal is good on wasteland and afghan.

It's horses for courses, I get some superb long range kills on derail using a thermal scope and a scar... I find I can see them fairly easily.

Size of the telly does make a difference in what/how much detail you can see, not saying I am good enough to actually hit what I see, but I can see it. The difference between our old LCD 37" and its replacement 50" plasma was astounding. I don't think I would even bother playing after seeing the game on a friend's 27" CRT.

The plasma has since died, and I am now on a 46" LCD and it still makes a difference. How far away do you sit from the telly?. If you are sitting at the other side of the room trying to keep to the "recommended" 10ft+ distance, then move closer, that distance is good for movies etc. I sit much closer, face about 3ft away from the screen and there is not much I don't see, again, my reflexes don't allow me to do a whole lot with it, but visibility isn't an issue.
