I just had a look on Autotrader. 456s can be had for less than £28k now it seems. This seems good value....doesn't it?

Absolutely, as long as you can afford the running costs.

And this is the crux of the matter......... It's still a supercar at the end of the day, with the associated costs...

Anyone have any real life examples of what these might be?

We were discussing the 456's merits in the O/T thread the other day.

Running costs can be summed up as: A Lot.

A £10k service bill wouldn't be uncommon.

Close friend had one and it was magical but if you buy a wrong-un the costs can be crazy. Electric window and door issues are the worst and can cost thousands for some reason as the seals go. A service will be several grand but I still think its worth it. Just do your research....

£10k? Wow. I looked at Verdi Ferrari ( http://www.verdi-ferrari.com/servicing.htm) and they do fixed price servicing of £1,895 max. Where does the other £8,105 come from?

I've had two, an early and a late car both manuals, loved them. Commuted 80 miles a day in one, it never let me down. The servicing cost are £2K/year but if you use it regularly allow for brakes/tyres/dampers/radiators as needed, budget on another £2-4K a year . Then brace yourself for depreciation on resale, horrendous!

They can't get much lower than £27k, can they?

There have been quite a few threads about running costs on the ferrai section.

IIRC steering racks can be a problem and are horrendously expensive

I think that if you set the high maintenance costs, against the low depreciation you would experience compared to a new car of similar value, it doesn't seem too silly. As long as your servicing is fairly routine and you don't suffer a catastrophic failure. The only thing I would say is that when I went in one, it didn't quite live up to the anticipation I had built up. I just wanted to hear the V12 a little bit more, although I'm sure that could be sorted. The 550 is getting tantalising 'affordable' too!

If I had the money to fund the purchase and then the running costs it'd be a no brainer for me. I think it's one of the more elegant Ferraris.

Chap up the road from me has one and parks it on the street - has some aftermarket wheels on it that don't suit, but it still looks like a nice bit of kit - I had the notion that it would be a "Cheap Ferrari" to tool around in, but then I woke up and remembered; there is no such thing as a cheap Ferrarisilly

I read on here that a bonnet can cost 12k, can anyone shed truth on that?

If you don't need rear seats get a 575M, great car much better than a 550. Don't believe the 550 hype, usually from dealers that can't shift them. Had two 575M's both manual, both brilliant! Running costs the same as a 456....
