That's exactly what I said to my wife when we were watching the news report on this. The reporter was implying she did it because of greed but I was more inclined to think it was beacuse she loved the attention she was getting.

Yes, it is rather common, sadly.

Is he child taken away from the mother in these circumstances? It is surely child cruelty?

I think taking the child away from the mother in these circumstances is imperative. She is obviously a danger to her own child and has put him through total and unnecessary trauma throughout much of his life. Whatever loss he may feel with his mother being removed is more than likely outweighed by the physical benefits he will feel without her being around.

Courts have to weigh up all the pros and cons of a situation and decide what they think, on balance, will be best.

I don't think its greed, or attention, its something wrong with the brain.

I once had a child who kept having blackouts at the age of two. Parents were both destraught at this to the point where we had to put them both on antidepressants and give them counselling. The child was getting an average of one blackout a day and had all the investigations under the sun, cardiac, respiratory, you name it. These conditions can be very hard to find. We even had written complaints from the mother and father that we weren't doing enough. Nice middle class working family.

We noticed a rather strange pattern of the three blackouts while the child was in hospital that despite it being a high visibility ward none of the staff were ever present during the blackouts. The last was quite severe and the child stopped breathing. I remember it well as I was on-call that night and nearly lost the child.

The consultant sent them up to kings the next day which has a secret video camera on a particular bed. Three days later we got a video of the mother waiting till everyone wasn't around and then carefully putting a pillow over the childs face till the staff rushed in to save it.

Mum ended up with the psychiatrists but a subsequent social work hearing decided it wasn't in the childs best interests to be removed from the mother. As far as I know the family were still together.
