Not really.http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/business/8471451.stm
They pay for an extra seat upfront if they are obese to ensure they have enough room, but if when they get on the plane the seat next to them is naturally empty, then they get a refund.
What's the beef?

Fatty needs two seats and buys 1.75. If the seat would be empty then they don't pay for it.
Seems fair enough but it does sort of take the piss that their massive weight isn't taken into consideration when pricing their tickets as well. Afterall it is with luggage under the guise of "it will use more fuel".

Dont care if it irritates them, how would you like to sit next to mr fat and the rolls of fat are coming over the arm rest and onto your personal space? that an couple it with a long haul flight that is fully booked, not nice...http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/business/8471451.stm
The only thing worse would be to have the middle seat between mr and mrs obese and then you have it from both sides and they dont sit next to each other cause they know they can both fit in one seat each.
My idea of flying hell, even more so than flying with chavs...

So if I pay for a seat up front, and when I get on the plane there is no-one else there, then I can get a refund? What's the beef?
Your logic doesn't make sense to me. Perhaps I'm reading it wrongly. If they've paid for an extra seat then surely there won't be anyone sat in it? As it is reserved for them?

I was listening to an Air France bloke on the radio at lunchtime, and I think he intimated that if there were spare seats elsewhere on the plane then they wouldn't get charged, ie if the plane was not full. As if it's full then hypothetically they have to buy the extra seat to guarantee space, whereas if the plane is not full they could have had the spare seat anyway.
Or something.

Seems fair to me but why do they get the same baggage allowance?
Everyone should be weighed at check-in, including luggage, and charged/refunded accordingly depending on the total weight.
Excellent idea. Base it on the average weight of person within the country they are flying out from.Everyone should be weighed at check-in, including luggage, and charged/refunded accordingly depending on the total weight.
Great incentive for people to lose weight before they go on hols

Rightly so!
If they don't build chairs big enough, they should be entitled to another one for free. It's discrimination and against their human rights.
Consider the following examples: If they don't build chairs big enough, they should be entitled to another one for free. It's discrimination and against their human rights.
My wife is a dwarf. She does not need the same size seat as normal-sized people. Is it:
a) Discrimination that she is forced to pay for a full seat (that is too big for her) instead of, say, 0.75 of a seat?
b) Does she have a 'human right' (and by the way, I really think you need to swot up on exactly what a right is, how it is derived, what 'rights' actually 'exist') to a seat that is designed specifically for her size?
I have a fear of poor people - the medical condition nonhomopecuniaphobia. I feel nauseous when I am near someone who is not a millionaire. The chances of my condition being agitated when sitting in economy class are far more significant than when in first.
By your logic (that fat people have a right to 2 seats and only pay for one, and that they have a human right to a cabin environment suited to them):
a) Is it against my human rights that airlines make me pay for first class? (and if so, could you please be my lawyer at the ECoHR?)
b) Why am I discriminated against when I ask at the check-in desk for the net assets of my neighbor on the plane? (They don't tell me and this harms my in-flight experience because of my condition - surely that's discrimination?)
Rusty Arches:
Get real. I think the Air France action is perfectly reasonable. I would prefer to see them having to pay the full double price, because I see buying a plane seat as 'renting' space on a plane that is travelling from A to B. If you want to rent more space (for whatever reason), then you should pay more. I am, however, fully aware that politically this could be biting off more than is chewable (oh ha ha you say) so I can see the Mill-ian harm principle that Air France take as acceptable.
